1. If you’re American say you’re Canadian (seriously, this is coming from an American.)
2. Make a copy of your driver’s license, passport, hostel/hotel reservations, tour reservations and stick them in a different area of your luggage.
3. Bring multiple types of cash such as credit cards, traveller’s checks, debit cards, so if you lose one thing you won’t be out of money completely and credit cards you can always cancel.
4. Make sure you have a list of phone numbers that you may need such as credit card agencies (if your card is stolen), Roadside assistance if you have a rental car, Hotels or hostels you plan to stay at, Police stations of cities you’ll be in.
5. Always go to the airport 2 or 3 hours before your flight and check in.
6. Try to sleep on the plane (use Sominex if you have to) if you are flying overseas, it is some of the best advice I can give.
7. Make sure if you bring medication you have it in a marked container (especially prescription drugs).
8. If you wear eye glasses, have an extra pair with you, in case something happens to the first pair.
9. Always confirm reservations by emailing the hostels or hotels you’re planning on staying at.
10. Wear colors that won’t make you stand out if you’re travelling alone.
11. Beware of pickpocketers, their favorite prey is tourists.
12. If you lose your passport go to your country’s embassy for a new one.
This is all I can think of right now, if anyone has other ideas please add them.
