Has anyone stayed in a hostel in Cairo? There seem to be a few situated in the square by the Egyptian Museum which is where I’d like to be as it’s right in downtown…but I can’t find any reviews on them.

I’d love any help!

My mate stayed in one recently but I forget the name! If there’s a hostel called King Tut’s then I think that’s it… She liked it, said it was nice.

I stayed in Pension Roma. I can’t remember if they have dorms or not, but the going rate for a single was about $10. They aren’t in walking distance of the main square, but the rooms are really beautiful and the staff is super-helpful. The subway was really close and easy to use, so you could get to the attractions in about 15 or 20 min.

King Tut – i heard of it as well when i went to Egypt

Canadian Hostel – i think that’s the name of it..
I actally took a tour of Egypt.. but the owner of the tour also owned this hostel, and it’s quite "european" standard in terms of hostels

Both are good from what i hear

I stayed the first few nights at The Sun but although the atmosphere and location were great, the hard-as-a-rock pillows and less than clean bathrooms left alot to be desired, so another traveler and I got a room at the Mayfair in Zamalek, which I was fine with. Still pretty convenient despite the 5 pound taxi ride, which cost about $1 US at the time. If you stay at the Mayfair, just pick a nearby landmark and get off there and walk; taxi drivers never could find the place. This was in Sept 2000, so it’s been awhile.

BTw, I don’t think the Egyptian Museum is downtown anymore; I think it moved to a larger building closer to the Pyramids but I could be wrong.
