How to stop experienced travellers from giving you advice:

1) Open new topics for stuff that has been discussed 3 times over the past month

2) whine when someone tells you to run a search

3) Demand that others give you an intinerary completely suited to your likes and needs, which you haven’t told them.

Sure, there are people on here who are jackasses, but generally people are more helpful than not.

If you’re really too lazy to do a search (gee, most of us do have other things to do than to constantly write out the same paragraphs on the same cities over and over again) and you don’t want any advice, just go buy a guide book and stop posting on the internet!

The search on this board is beyond terrible. So it’s not surprising that you see the same questions over and over.

How about if you see a question that has been asked over and over and you’ve answered it many times, you either don’t post on it or actually give someone a helpful answer? People will take the time to bitch at someone for asking the same question that’s been asked over and over when they very easily could’ve taken that time to actually answer their question. If you don’t feel like answering the same question again, then just don’t respond to that post. It’s simple really.

oh please! The questions are hardly specific. If someone asked what stop on the Paris Metro a certain hostel was located at, no one would say "go do a search", they would just answer it. Instead, the questions are more like "What fun things are there to do in London, Paris and Amsterdam oh and also where should I stay and for how long"…answering that takes a long time and has been answered before.

The search function is bad but it’s not impossible to work out. I used it recently to gather info for a friend going on a trip.

Yes, we all know the search isn’t perfect, but that doesn’t make it any better to post something like:

"What is there to do in London"

or something like that. The reason any of us get annoyed is simply because it’s impossible to answer a question that general. And then every once in a while someone DOES answer, and the OP never even responds!!

But honestly, more annoying than this recently is the fact that we have all these pyramid schemes posting on here, as well as the fact that we don’t have a moderator. It would SOO nice to be able to get some stickies up here…… I think if I see the word BUMP again, I’m going to puke

I was a newbie..i navigated my way through..

People, try to get more resourceful. This is not the only site on Europe. `Fun things to do in PAris’ is featured in a thousand other sites.

So saves everyone else those questions.

And yes..do a search. People do not want to trouble themselves..by searching. Hence, they just ask a oft-repeated question..assuming someone will answer.
Put some thought..some logic..a little effort and use some common sense and this forum will become better.

And there’s one thing I Cannot comprehend.
PEople wanting suggestions on itineraries that are for 3 months.
Should I spend 7 days at Barcelona..or 8? Jesus…in a 3 month itinerary…man work it out!

What you said is exactly true. You might not, for example, know what there is to see in Paris. I for example, wouldn’t have the first clue on somewhere like S. America. So what would I do? I would prob. start at Frommers, or something like that, and read up on the places, and find some that sound interesting to me. Then, I would get some specific questions, and try to ask them on this site, or a similar site.

It works great that way & it’s amazing how useful this site can be. I’ve seen people ask questions like "what are the bus times from Sarajevo to Podgorica" and I can answer that with an exact answer. Even if you asked, "how can I get from Sarajevo to Montenegro" many of us could give lots of useful info on that.

But now think if you asked "What’s up with the Balkans, anything to see there"

I agree to what most of the veterans in this forum have to say. To many times, people come up with questions without doing a little research first. Before asking where you should go and what you should do, try to do some research and find out what interests you and what you would like to see. Then try making some rough plans on your own. It doesnt take a veteran traveller to create some sort of sensible itinerary.

Second of all, when you ask a question, be as specific as possible. No one can answer where you should go within a city without knowing if your a partier, a fan of architecture and history or just there to meet new people. Being specific will also let others know that you are serious about your inquiry and they will be more likely to respond.

Lastly, do a search and just see what you come up with and then if your have further questions, post them. But try and say that you already conducted a search but it was inconclusive so that others know that yo put forth some effort and they dont have to answer the same question for the 5th time that day. (Although I do agree that the search options are quite horrible if you are looking for a more detailed topic.)

We must also remember that it is communication that keeps this thing going and healthy.

This site helped me a hell of a lot when I planned my last trip to Europe. I agree with GregiurUW if you try to get info, be specific… that is unless you want a long winded version followed by more questions, followed by a bitch session about Iraq or Dafur or America…. if this is the case then post in the pub.

First you make fun of the posters who have contributed a lot to the website by providing a lot of information (points #1 and #5), but then you criticize them for not taking the time to write a post and referring "newbies" to the search function instead (point #4). As you yourself implied, it is time consuming to answer questions on here, but I love talking about traveling so much (and I hate it when people get the wrong impression of certain countries from the media) that I donate my time here (but I no longer visit the Eurotrip pub). My friends all have different itnerests, thus I could never discuss the Louvre with them -for example. Eurotrip allows me that outlet. I can discuss the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Prado, etc, with people who are actually interested in going there.

I do agree, however, that some of the "older" folks could have been more polite when referring "newbies" to the search function. I still beleive the search function can and should be a useful part of the research process, but there is a nice way to ask people to use it, and this does need to be brought to some people’s attention.

On spelling: I admit I have corrected people on spelling a few times. But I only do this to help them. The most common mistake people make is calling the European rail travel program "Euro rail" instead of Eurail. Yes, I understand what you mean, but if you went and did an internet search on your own, and typed "Euro rail," Google and Yahoo might have no clue what you’re talking about. Therefore, you should know the proper term. The "Chunnel" (instead of its proper name Eurostar) is another example, as well as Thíra and Firá (two place-names in Greece that people always confuse with each other), among countless other examples.

And finally, on general questions:

Perhaps you haven’t been visiting this site long enough to see some of the ridiculous questions that have been posted. This one poster once (in the transport forum) was asking about people having sex in public in Europe. If I answered sarcastically to any travel-related question, it was this one. For all it’s worth, I do recognize the fact that these questions are culturally rooted. For each and every one of us, our own culture gives us an image about a cetain country, continent, or region without ever having been there. We might perceive a foreign culture as inferior, superior, better, worse, poorer, richer, whatever, without really knowing much about that society. These stereotypes often reveal more about our own culture than about the culture we’re trying to describe.

Now, some of the questions are too vague, and it’s difficult to answer them. "Where should I go, Portugal or Finland" is not going to get any responses. One or two of us may ask that poster to be more specific, not to be a jackass, but out of courtesy (and because it’s the only possible way one could respond). This may seem like a legitimate question to a "newby" but on our end, it’s difficult to work with. It’s like asking: "what should I eat tonight? Chicken or pasta?" Wouldn’t you say "Umm, I don’t know dude." Now, if I asked "does the restaurant down the street have chicken on the menu?" -isn’t this a more reasonable question to work with?

Yes, alot of people become a member on this site just so they can ask a question like "Where should I go ,France or Italy?" they probably don’t realize that other people have asked the same thing.

I find the search on this board really useful. Okay, you won’t get an answer if you search ‘how much does the train from Prague to Krakow cost’ but if you search ‘Prague Krakow’ and you take the time to look through the old posts, even if you don’t find the cost of the train, you’ll also come across loads of other interesting and useful information and ideas. Planning a trip takes a little bit of time and effort.
