Although Spain’s “law of return” policies used to be less liberal than those of, say, Britain, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Austria, or Italy, there’s now good news: In 2003, Spain relaxed its “law of return” policies, making it easier for recent descendants of Spanish citizens to gain Spanish citizenship. I think that anyone with a Spanish citizen parent now gets automatic citizenship (eliminating the requirement to prove Spanish residency), while someone with Spanish citizen grandparent(s) is eligible for Spanish citizenship by proving just one year of residency in Spain.
