I know that this site recommends $100 a day but what is that including? It seems that one way to save a lot of money is to get a round trip flight, but thats hard to work out in my plan.

$100 a day would be food, lodging, admissions to museums and attractions, the occasional beer, laundry and local transportation (subway, bus, tram) plus a shade extra for the occasional club or souvenir purchase. It would not include your flights to/from Europe or your transportation between cities in Europe. Thus, you probably need to cut your itinerary to about 75 days if $10,000 is your total budget.

Round trip flights are almost always cheaper than two one-ways and tickets with an open return date. Sometimes you can find an open jaw ticket (into one city like London and out of another such as Paris or Frankfurt) that’s the same as or only slightly more expensive than a roundtrip.

With a weak US dollar, Europe has become expensive, but as long as you don’t have champagne taste but is on a beer budget, you’ll still manage to enjoy and stretch your dollars while in Europe. Book or buy most of your hotels, museum passes, railpasses, etc. before leaving the US. Re: Cash, put a credit balance in your credit card (arrange with your credit card issuer) to avoid “loan” rates when you get cash from ATM’s. The Loan rates are for the cash advances (if you didn’t transfer money to have a credit balance in your credit card) and you are charged daily for it until you pay the “loan”. There will still be ATM fees, but they’re miniscule compared to the loan “interest” charges.

I am leaving from NYC with $5000 for 37 days

Well, save at least 2000 pounds if you’re staying in 2 months. Given the recent volatility of the stock market, it comes to question whether maintaining a stock investment is a good idea at all. Well it can be – it just depends on how well you manage your investment portfolio. If you buy low, and then sell high, like it’s best to – you can see some handsome dividends. First, you want to invest in a proven performer, or a company whose products/services are in high demand, or will be. Obviously, heavily investing on a company specializing in underwater basket weaving isn’t the best idea, is it? You can make in the stock market, but it has to be done carefully and prudently for it to pay off.
