How times have changed
Sat, 06/19/2010 - 13:29
Four years ago the Pub was alive with World Cup posts, predictions, spoilers, commentary, etc.. We even had a link to a site that we all made picks on, and the winners got t-shirts I believe.
Flash forward 4 years and not a single post after a full week’s slate of matches. Oh well.
BTW, South African police have issued an arrest warrant for Koman Coulibaly, as he was observed robbing Team U.S.A. in front of 45,573 witnesses at Ellis Park in Johannesburgh yesterday.

brazil or argentina to win the world cup
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
How times have changed…the USA is advancing in the World Cup!
Almost hosed with another bad call. Imagine not advancing because of TWO potential winning goals disallowed because of bad calls. We win the group and now wait to see who we play Saturday.
Ashcloud, Argentina or Brazil? Ballsy calls there!
i know i’m sticking my neck out on the line by predicting brazil or argentina.
ok i’ll go ballsy, by saying Uraguay!
i’ll go mental by saying USA!
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
Arrivederci, Italy!
LOL Ashcloud.
Well I was going to post about the possibility of Spain getting knocked out and they went ahead and scored as I was typing to go up 2-0 on Chile. I was pulling for the Swiss to get in, but that hardly seems likely now.
I have to agree with Bradley here: http://g.sports.yaho…
This is pretty cool. Worth a look if you haven’t seen it yet. http://g.sports.yaho…
It’s called ‘diving’ or ‘simulation’, not ‘flopping’.
But i agree all players seem to over-dramatise contact, as a way of getting free-kicks or getting opposition players sent off. Just look at the Brazil vs ivory coast game, where Kaka got sent off, when an Ivory Coast player ran into his shoulder and went down like he’d been shot. its disgraceful but its been going on for years and now a part of the game. As we say in England ‘its just not cricket’.
sucks about england & USA going out in the 2nd round.
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
good to see the Americans getting more into football (soccer).
although they need to come up with some better chants than ‘U.S.A, U.S.A’, if they’re going to catch up with everyone else.
you should see how many different chants, songs, the england fans have.

The “world’s” reaction.
Kinda very uncool actually…

Yeah, we need our own “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
About the diving (I’ve seen it called flopping, too) why are they making such a big deal about it now? Is it actually occurring more often, or is it more blatantly dishonest?
A guy on my husband’s team (originally German, naturalized American) performed some Academy Award-winning dives; usually he was just sort of embellishing something that had really happened to him, in the hopes that the ref would notice.
Aw Ads, don’t be a hater. You know The World consists of major US cities. Let us have our moment.
Alot of the time, our songs are made up from already written pop songs, and people just change the lirics. although sometimes you will hear a completly original chant, and for that I have no idea who makes these up. (I would put some up, but alot of the contain offensive language, which i’m sure not everyone wants to see).
I don’t think they are just making such a big deal of it now, its been a big issue in all international tournaments and at proffessional league level.
It’s funny you say about the German diving, as it is believed that the Germans were the first to start the diving, over-acting in football.
Flopping must just be the American term.
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
Hey, it’s the Pub, it’s allowed.
I agree with Cil, but let’s face it, it’s really not done over here, so chants like “You’re not Ghana win!” are about as good as it will get.well when England played USA, we sang “ your not swimming any more”, (due to the BP oil spill). thats creativity.
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
Go on my son.
BAHAHAHA @ Don
Us Americans probably get the term “flopping” from basketball. It’s when a wussy defender lets himself get knocked over to get “charging” called.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
I’d say it’s a term used as in the expression, “flopping around like a fish out of water”. Some of these guys do remind me of that, a player from another team barely grazes them and they go flying through the air clutching their ankle/knee/shin/head or whatever.
Anyway, how about Suarez yesterday? He went from goat to national hero in about 5 minutes.
If he dosen’t play volleyball instead of soccer on the goal line, Ghana wins. Instead, Uruguay is in the semi-finals.
I felt kind of sorry for Gyan.
Well atleast were not the only ones who got destroyed by the Germans!
and we even managed to put two goals past them. poor Maradonna!
Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris
Maradona? Good riddance! He was fun for a while but now he’s just annoying. And what’s with the “Goodfella’s” suits he wears? It’s not 1986 anymore.
I support the U.S. first, then the Germans, but I’ll admit I never saw this coming. I thought they were too young and inexperienced, especially without Ballack, but they look great and could take the whole thing. My “sleeper” pick to start the tournament was the Netherlands, and wouldn’t THAT make an interesting final if they both win their next game?
As for Saurez, what should FIFA do? I heard they’re thinking of a multi-game suspension so he couldn’t play in the final should Uruguay get there. I agree, he literally stole a victory from Ghana.
