i am young, inexperienced and I have a few questions
Thu, 01/17/2008 - 14:46
[=“times new roman”][=“2”] [=“3”]hey, umm without getting into much detail. I am a 17 yearold male looking to meet up with a pen pal in germany. I am planning on going June 26th (the day after school ends) until whenever, id prefer to be there no more then a month.[/][/][/][=“times new roman”][=“3”][=“2”] [/][/][/][=“times new roman”][=“3”]I plan on traveling from the detroit airport (DTT OR DTW) and i would like to get to Munich (MUC). I have noticed some minute flights in late january and early feburary are dirt cheap, only a few hundred dollars. The time i would like to travel, the cheapest deal iv found with taxes is about 1400 give or take. What I am wondering is, should i just wait until late june to book a flight hoping that it will be cheaper or is that a bad idea?
Thanks!

Rest assured you won’t see any $300 plus priced flights in June!
June is perhaps the most expensive time to fly and the planes are packed. I would try to get a ticket by the end of March, I hardly recall any good summer sales to happen later then that. Here is what I suggest:
1. Read this forum, specifically new user thread.
2. Sign up for farecompare.com fare alerts.
3. Check out youth/student travel sites: studentunivers, sta, travelcuts.
4. Consider alternative airports as an option. May be you can fly from Toronto (Air Transat may have good fares not showing up elswhere) or into Franfurt and take a train, or even into London and take a budget flight.
5. Figure out what is your acceptable cost to travel. (IMO $1000 is reasonable, unfortunately, $800 is not bad, $600 is a bargain.) Be ready to book a good fare when you see one. It may not be available for very long.
Seva pretty much has it nailed. I am looking to travel about the same time and have found that $1100 is pretty standard, $1000 is good, and anything below that doesn’t exist. I am, however, flying out of Minneapolis. After watching fares every day for about three months, I finally gave up and booked a flight into Copenhagen with Icelandair for about $990. I just plain didn’t have $1000 when I was 17, and I doubt you do either. I do wish you the best of luck as you keep looking, however.
