I'm going to Guatemala!!!
Fri, 02/25/2005 - 18:37
Just a head’s up that I will be going to Guatemala for ten days during their Semana Santa (holy week) leading into Good Friday and Easter. The colonial city of Antigua is reknowned for its Semana Santa festivities, which I’m told include religious processions through the streets, which are covered in flower petals. I also plan on visiting the Mayan ruins of Tikal, where visitors stroll through lush jungle as howler monkeys swing overhead. If I have time, I may even cross the border into Honduras to see another famous Mayan site, Copan Ruinas.
The airfare was a bit on the expensive—$650 for a non-stop flight from LAX-GUA—but I’m really looking forward to the trip.
It doesn’t seem like many other Eurotrippers have been to Guate, so I will be happy to post about my trip upon my return.
You’re going to have a great time! I was able to go to Guatemala last year, mainly to see Tikal, but it was incredible. I wish I had more time to spend there, perhaps on another trip. You’ll love Tikal though, its one of the most impressive sites I have ever seen, and definitely don’t forget to climb Temple IV, amazing view! Have fun…
Your airfare was cheaper than ours out of Denver, and we went awhile back, ’99 or thereabouts. I think we paid $100-150 more.
I agree about Tikal. Spouse enjoyed Antigua.
Have a good time.
I think I just saw a big article on Guatamala—was it in USA Today? I dunno.
Have a great trip!
US Airways is starting non-stop service to Guatemala from Ft Lauderdale, FL soon, so their in-flight magazine has been featuring many articles on the place – and it looks like Guatemala will be becoming more popular for American tourists within the next 5 years…way to go in getting there before everyone else does!!
Let us know how it goes and have a fabulous time, you world traveler!
I’ll be going there (along with the rest of central america) this summer. Let me know about your trip.
Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone. I leave tomorrow night! And yes, Sailor, that article was in USA Today. I’m too lazy to look it up after the fact and post it.
My bro and I were in Guatemala 3 summers ago. It was a great trip (we went to Belize too). If you have time you should try to get out to Lago Atitlan too- it’s beautiful and so peaceful there. Guatemala is an amazing country! Que tengas buen viaje!
Atitlan (volcanic lake) was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
Very friendly people, too. We stayed in a hut-type place there, I will try to look it up.
There are several little villages on the shores of Lago Atitlan. We stayed in San Pedro for about 3 days at Hospedaje Casa Elena- which was a very nice hostel with it’s own dock that you could lay out on. Then we stayed across the river in San Marcos which was wonderful. It is soooo laid back and quiet. There is a meditation center there and a lot of older hippies who retired down there. We stayed at Hotel Quetzal. My brother thought it was sort of Robinson Crusoe-like because it is very wooded all around the hotel and the floors are dark wood. The family that runs it is so nice and they run a little cafe on the ground floor too. We ended up hanging out with their kids one night watching tv in the living room.
I agree with Cil. Lago Atitlan is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. You can go to the market at Chichicastenango as a day trip from here as well.
