Just wanted everyone buying a new bag to consider these two fabulous options I found.
1. Eagle Creek 26" Switchback Modular
(Found for $215US online w/Free shipping)
2. Victorinox/Swiss Army 26" Trek Packs/ or E-Motion Trek Pack Plus
(Start @ $229 w/free shipping on closeout/ Up to $329)
These bags are wonderful because:
1. They are so versatile! They have padded shoulder straps (with waist support strap) to carry as a backpack BUT ALSO HAVE a pull up handle with wheels to drag your heavy pack if you like! I have experimented with both of the handles and they seem incredibly durable. The bags also have two additional "grab" handles on the top and side to quickly yank off a luggage carousel.
2. They are spacious but small! These bags have a capacity of 71+ Liters. They are big enough to carry everything you need but small enough to throw on your back and not be overpowered. The Eagle Creek bag (not positive on the other) opens similar to a suitcase (zips around) so you can easily get to your belongings without having to dig and probably also helps to keep everything neat and organized. They also have various pockets on the inside to keep things seperated. I think these bags might also be small enough to carry on a plane, which would be great to avoid the hassle of checking luggage. Check with the airlines about size regulations. These bags also seem like they would fit fine into hostel lockers.
3. They both have detatchable daypacks! This is great because you don’t have to worry about lugging aroung two backpacks! The day pack (wtih shoulder straps) is the perfect size for everything you might need. Also, for train rides you can detatch the day bag to keep closer to you and stow you bag under your seat or at your feet.
4. They are stylish and durable! Both of these bags are incredibly sturdy and have durablity ratings of 9 and 10 respectively. The Victorionox looks a little better in my opinion, but the Eagle Creek is by no means lacking.
I know I must sound like a dork for raving about this style of bag, but they are so smart (and not terribly expensive either) so I just can’t imagine any reason why they are not more popular among backpackers. I am terribly excited about my find and I think it is going to be perfect for my trip. Just wanted to pass along the information.
Happy Traveling!
