ISIC vs IYIC?
Sat, 01/08/2005 - 16:08
I cant get a ISIC card anymore since i’m not a student, although i’ve been wondering if they really check to see if your student ID is valid. But anyways, is it worth getting the IYIC or is the ISIC the only one that gets you good discounts on trains, ferries, museums etc.
If a place has discounts for students, 99% they want to see your ISIC.
do you know if the company that issues the ISIC cards checks to see if the ID is still valid? I still have my college ID and could just copy it and see what happens… I just graduated in May.
In my country, ISIC cards are issued by many travel agencies and it is possible to find one which will not look at the student ID (though majority checks it).
IYIC isn’t good for much except getting a youth-class airfare, if it works out cheaper than other deals. Most discounts are only offered to students and for that you need an ISIC. But I found even with my ISIC that I got very few deals anywhere. A lot of museums needed local or European student ID to give discounted rates.
By the way to get the ISIC you need a transcript proving you’re registered in classes full-time. A recently-expired student ID won’t do it. You could always doctor a transcript… there are ways… but check to see if it’s really worth it to you. Probably not.
I never say I recommend this but my friend took a non-expired student ID of his friend, put his photo on it, made a copy on xerox, went to the travel agency and said he’s lost his ID but has the copy. As a result, he had an ISIC with his photo but not his surname – couldn’t use it for airlne tickets but it was fine for museums
