Hi, So my friend and I are extending our study abroad semester and backpacking for 3 weeks, from mid may to early june. We are starting off in florence, Italy and then plan on going to Switzerland for 5 days, austria/prague for 5 days, greece or croatia for another 5, and then back to rome for the remainder. We would like to minimize costs and get some type of eurorail pass, but if we need to fly then we will arrange. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice if this is too much for the period of time we have? if we had to choose between greece and croatia, which makes more sense? we like to see the sights, but we’re also interested in relaxing places and a fun nightlife.

Thanks for the help!

I am leaving from Florence, Italy with $2000 for 22 days
Interlaken, Prague, Athens, Cres, Rome

I would go to Croatia because it is easy to reach from Austria by train, is doable in 5 days, and has better and faster ferry links to Italy for your trip to Rome from there! I would consider point to point tickets for this trip if flexibility is not that important to you.

I am leaving from Atlanta, GA with $3000 for 36 days
Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Prague, Mostar, Sarajevo, Bol, Makarska, Florence, Málaga, Seville, Barcelona, Ibiza Town

Also, consider doing the trip reverse … Florence to Rome, Rome to Croatia through pescara or another port in Italy, Croatia to Prague on SmartWings flight, Prague to Austria, Austria to Switzerland, fly out of Zurich or Geneva or somewhere close in Germany like Munich. That would make more sense instead of backtracking imo. The flights from Split to Prague are usually not too expensive.

I’d say Croatia. 1) It’s easier to get to by train from Prague (although I’d look into flying in either case) 2) it’s very easy to get to Italy — either by ferry or by train through Slovenia (although that’s a long route unless you intend to spend time in Slovenia — which I highly recommend) 3) while I liked the Greek islands, Athens is a “been there, done that, won’t be going back” for me. Croatia on my “hope to get back there again sometime” list.
