Hey guys me and a buddy are wanting to climb Kili before the snow cap is the way of the dodo. Has anyone done it? I would love to do it backpacker style but look like you need a lic. guide and most of them have like 4-5 porters a person. I don’t want to pay for someone else carring my shit. So even cheap guides i can see online run 800. I guess this is one of those things where paying more and getting some experiance is a good thing.

any ideas, comments, or experiances?

I am leaving from Chicago with $2000 for 64 days

I’ve met people who climbed Kilamanjaro. It’s expensive but apparently a totally amazing experience. It’s also got a fair amount of risk associated with it, esp if you plan on doing the top part up to the ice cap, so having a guide is not really optional, it’s a necessity. Same goes for most challenging mountain treks, esp in the Himalayas/Andes

i don’t know about how hard it will be from my understanding its little more than a hard walk with no technical skill needed. In fact most outfitter say they will take 13 year olds and up. The main issue is altitude sickness most people find it so easy that they go up so fast they get sick. From what i read it has a 80%+ of sucess rate of summit on the longer route. I don’t know for sure jsut from web logs and web pages. I expect it to be similar to Mt Olympus. Guess you never know until ya go…I want a guide I just don’t want to pay a bunch of people to take my stuff up.
