Kind assistance on route plan
Wed, 05/18/2011 - 06:18
Dear all,
Newbie here from Singapore, embarking on the first trip to Europe!
Very excited
Ok here is the plan:
Date: 1st July to 22nd July (total of 21 days including return flights).
First stop: London (flight ticket already bought)
Thinking of this first route: 1) London 2) France 3) Switzerland 4) Italy 5) Greece
Thinking of this second route: 1) London 2) Holland 3) Germany 4) France 5) Switzerland 6) Italy 7) Greece
Last stop: still undecided (flight ticket not yet bought)
Based on experience and feasibility, which route will be better in terms of probability of surviving and enjoying the whole trip? Assuming I am using Europass to travel to these countries, which specific pass should I be getting? I will be backpacking
The reason for placing Greece as the last stop is because I hope to visit Club Vass for a bit of windsurfing action.
Many thanks in advance
Calvin.
You’ve only got about 19 days “on the ground” in Europe. 5 large countries would be a stretch. I would save Greece for your next trip. You can easily waste a full day getting to Greece and a full day getting somewhere else from Greece. You can spend a 3rd day getting to and from a single Greek Island. IMO, it’s not worth the time and money to get to Greece to only spend a day or two in Athens. Greece needs a week, two would be better.
Given your time frame, I would probably start with London, Paris, Amsterdam — all close together with fast and easy transportation between them. That will use about 8 days of the actual time you have in Europe. Check train schedules at http://reiseauskunft… and figure out what seems most reasonable for your remaining 11 days. I suggest add a smaller, less touristy place or two to the normal big city itinerary.
You won’t know which railpass is best until you have an exact itinerary. Use the trip planner. It will recommend the appropriate railpass.
After re-reading and re-thinking. I would do the London/Amsterdam/Paris trio then take an overnight train to Italy. Spend about 5 days seeing 2 Italian cities (or country areas) then fly or overnight ferry to Greece. Where in Greece is the area you want to wind surf?
Hi oldlady,
Thank you for your prompt reply
Really appreciate it!
The London/Amsterdam/Paris trio seems like a logical choice
What will be your recommended place per venue? The reason is because in Singapore, we are a city state and there are not much natural landscape. Our travelling will most probably be based on sightseeing on the big mountains, waterfalls, clear blue skies, instead of city and shopping.
Based on the above, will we be able to compact our travelling time on the London/Amsterdam/Paris trio and spend more time in Switzerland? Hopefully, we can also try some snow sking while on the trip
Lastly, the place I wanted to go for windsurfing in Greece is Club Vass (http://www.clubvass….). Alternatively, I know that Lake Garda in Italy also offers windsurfing. But I am not sure if Lake Garda is easily accessible if taking the Eurorail…?
Thanks for your kind comments in advance!

If i were u, I would do the 1st trip option: first route: 1) London 2) France 3) Switzerland 4) Italy 5) Greece, since u have just 21 days and what u want to do in Greece needs at least 3 or 4 days….
Remember the distance between each countries, is:
Lon-Par : 340 km (3 hours train)
Par-Swi: 490 km (zurich) (4 hours 30 min train)
Swi-Ita: 690 km (Rome) (around 7 hours train)
Ita-Greece: 1042 km (rome-athens) (this part might take u 12 hs if there is any train, or more ours if you take a ferry).
