I actually picked this tip up from my husband, who’s taken to carrying his laptop this way.

I had to go to Berlin recently for work, and was worried about carrying my laptop to and from the place I was working. I dispensed with the computer case completely, and instead stuffed it into one of those big padded envelopes, the kind padded with bubble wrap on the inside. This I wrapped in an old cotton cloth, and stuffed the whole thing into the big dingy canvas shoulder bag I use when doing my grocery shopping. The whole thing was much lighter than a normal carrying case, and I never had anyone look twice at my bag. This would probably work well for cameras also.
