Last minute Oktoberfest plans NEED HELP
Mon, 07/26/2010 - 20:44
Any advice from festival veterans is appreciated as I’m a bit overwhelmed….
There will be 2 in my party, and we’ve set aside 18/9 and 19/9 for Oktoberfest.
I’ve looked into getting tickets or reservations for various tents but do I really need them?
How easy is it to get a space for 2?
Can people drink outside the tents?
Can people move from tent to tent?
Any and all tips to make this an easy and stress-free adventure are welcomed.
TIA!
Forget about reservations now. Too late and hopeless on weekends anyways. Plus that they are available only for groups of normally 10 persons.
Too bad you have selected to go during a weekend, this is really difficult. On saturdays you should line up at 7 AM and even then there is a chance you won’t get in. It would be way to early for me anyway. Later on the day you can try your luck but depending on weather conditions and crowds you may or may not get in a tents. On sunday it should be easier, especially during the evening.
PS: I will be there also from sept. 19-22, if you like we can have a mass together.
I would immediately change your plans to 9/20-21. If you line up in front of a tent at about 9am (tents open at 10am), you can get a table until the lunch reservations show up giving you a few hours of drinking time. I rarely have a good time on the weekends, just too many people.
Luvbeers is right, better come during weekdays. It doesn’t make much sense to start waiting outside for a place at 7am in order to drink at 10 Am. You will be dead in the afternoon and miss the evening in the tent, which has the best atmosphere.
Agreed with all of the above. When I went, it was Thurs-Sun, but I believe we only got into the tents on Thurs and Friday. Moreover, we seriously DID line up at 7-ish in the AM, and we were definitely pretty loaded by noon. It is true that drinking that early does wreck your day and you can pretty much write off the afternoon and evening. The tents seemed impossible to enter in the evening as well. Going takes some level of commitment and you should prepare for several attempts that will fail.
Remember: you can’t drink/won’t be served if you don’t have a seat and once you leave you cannot get back in.
Also: the smaller your group, the better off you are. I went with one person and there were tables/groups who were merry enough to be willing to let us REALLy squeeze in their tables. If you are with a group and insist on staying together, you will definitely have a hard time finding a place, so be flexible and open to meeting new friends.
Moreover: do not wait until you REALLY have to pee to go head for the bathrooms. Start heading for the b-room lines about 30 min before you actually will have to pee. No seriously, as a woman double it!
I wish you luck! Also, be sure to check out some of the gems that Munich has to offer other than the fest, I am sure you will not be disappointed!! (definitely spend a day in the gardens).
Happy Travels!!!!
Also just walking up and down the main road between the tents at peak hours and in the evening on the weekends can be quite the task. You will feel like cattle being hearded!
As you they herd me to a cold Maß I don’t complain!
I’ve been to Oktoberfest twice and they were on weekends..I couldnt get into any of the tents except the Hofbrau..but even then, it was the standing area only but it was definitely worth it!! and don’t line up in the front, go to the side entrances where i have had good luck…(at the Hofbrau).
Good luck!!
