linen
Tue, 10/13/2009 - 11:18
Just a quick question, when a hostel says they offer linen are they referring to sheets only? or blackets as well.
I’m planning my trip for oct and don’t really what to lug around a sleeping bag or blanket…but i don’t want to freeze at night either.
I am leaving from New York with $3600 for 33 days

usually it means cheap sheets and a slightly sketchy looking blanket

Bottom sheet, pillow case, top sheet or duvet cover with duvet. Quality will depend on the hostel. I stayed at the big hostel in Koln a few weeks back, and bed linens (and just about everything else) were as good as some new 3 star hotels I’ve stayed at.
Be aware that “offered” is not the same as “included.” Offered usually means for an additional fee upon arrival (maybe 5-7 Euros). Included usually means included in the bed price.
hmmm, so it would be in my best interest to just suck it up and bring a sleeping bag and a sleep sheet thingy?
i really didnt want to have to carry that much, but theres nothing worse than not sleeping because youre too cold.
thank you so much.

Most hostels won’t allow a sleeping bag anymore as that is a prime way of transporting bedbugs. if they include sheets in the bed price, they may not allow sleep sheets either.
I would just bring the sheet and some warm clothes to sleep in, if it will be cold while you are there.

everyone that ive spoken to has told me that most hostels require a sleep sheet… o well..
this is apparently going to be a very cold trip

Well, I doubt they will let you freeze to death in the hostel. Surely they will have some heat turned on, at least a little bit. But anyway, bring the sheet and some warm clothes/socks and you should be fine.

Why not just shell out 5 Euros for sheets when you arrive? It’s not per-day, it’s a one-time expense when you check in, a lot less work and hassles than carrying your own stuff. And like Kayling said, most won’t let you bring your own, anyway.
5 euros might not sound like a lot, but it adds up rather quickly. If i stay in 12 different cities that’s an additional 60 to try and budget.
im pretty sure the cost of this trip is multipying daily. it just scares me.

They have silk sleep sheets which are really really lightweight and take up hardly any space in your bag. They also are much less bed bug-attractive than cotton sheets are. It would be worth your while to bring one, in case you need sheets, but it doesn’t take up much space if you don’t need it.

I am very cold natured and, of course, cannot sleep when I’m cold. If you’re worried about being cold and do not want to bother with a sleeping bag, consider packing warm sleep clothes that you can also wear on cold days:
Thermal shirt (long johns) – these are extra warm and can be worn under a t-shirt during the day.
Thermal hiking socks: super comfy and designed to keep your feet warm. They also give great arch support. I use these when I sleep and when I plan on “hiking” the town.

If you can, check if a flannel sheet can be used as a “sleep sheet.”
Good Luck & Stay Warm
