Locks to bring?
Mon, 05/23/2005 - 00:53
Hi,
My pal and I are both backpacking together. I wanted to make sure I’ve got all the locks I’ll need. I have a normal dial-type lock for the locker and multiple mini locks for my pack zippers.
What I’m wondering about is…..a lock for the trains and hostels if there isn’t a locker for them.
Would this be good for locking down to a hostel bed or a train?
Thanks!

A lock with a motion sensor and an alarm? Sounds a little extreme to me. The stainless steel cable sounds all very well but what’s the point if someone can just slash through the strap of your backpack?
If you’re keen on securing your backpack to a bed frame, I don’t see why a normal bike chain/lock wouldn’t be enough. I wouldn’t be able to justify spending a lot of money on a lock that doesn’t really provide any more security than a cable and a padlock.
At the end of the day, if you’re on a train, try and keep your backpack close, when possible. And if you’re leaving your backpack at a hostel without a locker during the day, complain to the staff to upgrade their facilities!
(And then chain it to the bed I guess..)
I actually own this lock already (it was for my laptop). I should have specified….I’m going to disable the alarm part and just use it as a cable lock. I suppose it will do the same function of a bike lock?
I’d think twice about that – if you need to change trains quickly, you can bet you’ll be groping around for your keys, or trying to remember the combo. And that train won’t wait . . .
just keep an eye on your bag, and make sure that you are comprehensively insured.
