London: Help with my 2 day itinerary.
Sat, 04/21/2012 - 20:43
Here are the projected stops. Can you give advice on the order we should see them to help with efficiency. We would rather not backtrack to save time. If there are some must see sites not listed below, please let me know! We will be there for 2 days, so feel free to mention which things should be done in the morning, afternoon, and night. I’m guessing we won’t be able to do everyone of these. So please be realistic and help us choose which ones to see. Thanks!
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
Tower Bridge
Westminster Abbey
Trafalgar Square
Buckingham Palace – changing of the guards
National Art Gallery
London Eye
St. Paul’s Cathedral
Tower of London
Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square & Covent Garden, London (One longer stop)
Would it be best to get one of those bus tour passes where we could hop on/hop off? Or would it be better (or even feasible) to walk?
I am leaving from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and traveling for 13 days
London, Paris, Salzburg, Venice, Rome, Prague

A lot of this is walkable (once you get to a starting point — most hotels will require a tube ride to get to a group of these sights) and the number 15 city bus goes by a lot of it. Check your library and used book sources for a guide book (anything less than about 10 years old will do) and plot this out. Given your too-rushed-2- days to try to “see” these things, I’d probably do one of the hop-on-hop-off bus tours. Ride the whole route the first thing on Day 1 then use the tour map to plan how to use the bus (tickets are good for 24 hours) to see what you want for the rest of day 1. Use a London map with public bus routes on it and the subway map to figure your route for day 2. Some of the hop-on-hop-off bus tours (Big Bus is one), offer a ticket that’s valid for 48 hours. It will cost a lot more than using public transportation and walking, but it may be worth it for your tight time frame, especially if there’s a stop near your hotel/hostel.
You cannot possibly do this in 2 days unless you literally RUN through the attractions, so defiantly start picking and choosing. I highly recommend the British Museum and to check out a play at Shakespeare’s Globe.
Edinburgh, Madrid, London, Segovia, Santiago de Compostela, Toledo, Córdoba, Seville, Granada, Barcelona, Lyon, Nice, Paris, Bruges, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Kutná Hora, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Füssen, Venice, Milan, Pisa, Florence, Siena, Rome, Pompei, Naples, Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, Budapest, Hunedoara, Sighişoara, Bucharest, Sofia, Plovdiv, Istanbul, Selçuk
Porto, Guimarães, Lisbon, Tomar, Sintra, Evora, Lagos, Seville, Málaga, London
Ya, we definitely need to pick and choose. I am mostly looking for advice on which to see early in the morning (maybe ones that attract large crowds so we can beat the crowds), and which are best in the evening (maybe they look very pretty at sunset or in the evening etc…)
Beyond that, It would be great to get some advice on what order to see things so we can avoid paying extra for transportation. We are going to look at a map ASAP but wanted the best initial guidance we could get. Thanks!

Once you’ve chosen where you want to go, a combination for the Tube map and a map of London will tell you what’s the best order to go in. Because your time is so limited, do not get a bus pass, just get an Oyster Card, load it up and go. I know the London Pass lets you bypass some lines (most notably the Tower of London) but it’s not worth it for 2 days.

If you decide to use the tube you can order an Oyster Card from the U.S. It doesn’t cost any extra for shipping and ours got to California in about a week:
