My friend and I will be in London from approx. July 30 – Aug 3. We are obviously aware the Olympics are going on (partially the reason we are going actally – don’t wanna miss the hype!) but I am wondering about booking hostels. Should we book them now? I am worried about not getting a good one (or one at all) if I don’t do it now. Also, we don’t really know where to stay! I heard Camden area is great, but the Camden hostel is pretty rough. Do you think it would be a good idea to try and stay near some of the venues? Is there a central one anyone has heard about.Or any tips on London during the Olympics? Places to go, avoid, price hikes etc? I imagine it will be very crazy.
Sorry for so many questions! Really appreciate any help we get, thank you so much!Smile

I would book ASAP, to make sure you get a good price and can guarantee a room. London has an amazing transit system so don’t worry about picking a place close to the venues. As far as which neighborhood to stay in, I personally don’t know, I stayed near king’s cross and it was ok, there were some clubs nearby. For saving money on attractions, I suggest the London Pass, it gives you free access to a lot of sights and will let you bypass some lines so you can make the most of your time there.

Thanks for the tip.

And WHOA! I knew hostels would be expensive during Olympics, but this is crazy!!!

I was just trying to book Generator London hostel through eurotrip and for the dates I selected (July 30-Aug 3 – 4 nights) it said $15.84 each night. Then I go and pick the biggest dorm so its the cheapest and it adds up to over $60 a night!!!
I understand that it is “on average” $15 a night, but when I selected the dates and Eurotrip still said it was that price, I wasn’t expecting it to end up being $500 for 2 people for 4 nights. Nuts,

I just booked Astor Hyde Park. It was the absolute cheapest I could find at $33.25 a night, which is such a relief. Phew!

Thanks for your help!

What site are you booking with? Some sites have better prices than others, sorry I didn’t mention that early.

I booked my London hostel through this site actually. That is probably the only one I will book for now, I just knew it would be busy with the Olympics and all.
Is there a better site you know of? I can use it when I book the rest of my hostels.
Thanks again….I think you’ve answered every question I’ve had haha

This site is nice because it’s affiliated with hostelbookers.com, which normally has the best prices, plus the site gets a small commission. However, to make sure you’re stretching your buck far enough, check hostelz.com. It searches several sites for the best prices on hostels, so it’s good to check to make sure you’re getting the best price.

I backpacked through the UK and Ireland a little under 2 years ago for 2 weeks, so it’s the only country I can actually comment on, plus it’s nice to help a fellow Canadian university student Smile

hostelworld.com seems to be consistently more expensive plus charges a booking fee, the good thing about hostelz.com is that it checks both sites.

I’ll definitely check them for future hostel bookings, but if the price isn’t totally different then I’d rather book it through this site because it has been super helpful, and they probably deserve a little commision (assuming they even get one)

Thanks everyone!
