About 10 of my friends and I are taking a 9 day trip in September 2012. We’re flying into London and leaving from Madrid. Other than that, nothing is set.

We want to see as much as we can and at the same time enjoy our stay.

Suggested cities from our group, other than London and Madrid, are Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Prague, Nice, and Ibiza. These are just suggestions, not must see destinations for this trip.

Suggestions of how we can do the most and remain sane are appreciated.

Nine days is not much time, especially when your destinations will require a lot of travel time.

My suggestion would be to take the fast train to Paris. Then head west to some small town in the Basque area of France or Spain, then to Bilbao, then to Madrid. You can easily visit some small towns, like Toledo or Segovia, as day trips from Madrid.

Good thoughts. We haven’t really looked into the smaller out of the way towns yet.

Consensus is we just want to breeze by Paris. Maybe take a day to just hit the highlights and get out of there. Amsterdam seems to be pretty high on everyone’s list. Night/sleeper trains are also okay with everybody.

Does your 10 days include flights to/from DFW?

We have 9 days and 8 nights in Europe. 10 days would include the flights to and from DFW.

For 8 days (arrival day is pretty much shot due to sleep deprivation, jet lag and culture shock and a fair share of another day will be lost to getting to your next destination) I’d just do London and Madrid. Look for a cheap flight between the two.

I’d spend 4 or 5 nights (depending on how transportation to Madrid works out) in London, planning 1 or 2 day trips, or maybe a single overnight trip (leaving the majority of your gear in London). Bath, Salisbury/ Stonehenge or even Paris via Eurostar are among dozens of possibilities. 3 or 4 nights in Madrid, with a day trip to Avila, Segovia or Toledo (medieval towns) or maybe to El Escorial (16th century) or Aranjuez (18th/19th).

If you want to do another major city (I don’t recommend for such a short trip and so many people) Paris will be best due to transportation — only 2 hours from London with good overnight train service to Madrid.

Thanks oldlady. If Amsterdam turns out to be a must for this trip, what would be the best way to get there and end up in Madrid?

London to Amsterdam will take nearly 4 1/2 hours to fly and 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours by train. I’d decide based on what I could find that didn’t screw up an entire day. Use www.whichbudget.com to see which low fare airlines fly this route and check our “cheap flights” forum for more links, tips and help. Check train schedules and connections at http://reiseauskunft… and use www.Eurostar.com to look for cheap fares on the Eurostar portion of the train trip.

If you go to Amsterdam and the next stop is Madrid I would fly Easy Jet.

You could do Amsterdam and MAdrid. And in between visit the Oktoberfest in Munich!
