Looking for airfare to Europe this July!
Fri, 05/27/2011 - 11:54
My wife and I are looking for airfare to Munich or Barcelona or Prague on July 1 and returning on July 10. We are flying out of Atlanta. I saw fares last night from Atl to Munich for $980 on Delta and went to book it this morning and they went up $700+!! I wanted to scream. We would really like a direct flight if possible. Any ideas are greatly appreciated…we don’t want to spend more than $1100ish. Thanks alot!
Also….We would prefer and open jaw flight…but price is certainly the most important part.
Doing a quick check, I don’t see anything cheaper right now.
A couple of thoughts: – Prices are often higher when booking on weekends, so maybe try waiting until Sunday night or Monday to see if prices go down. – Weekend travel will cost you more (I assume you’re locked into your dates so as to maximize time off from work).
I was just on Las Ramblas last weekend after a week on the Costa Brava. Looking forward to spend more time on Bothalona in future. Munich is great. Prague too; probably one of the most picturesque places I’ve visited. Are you sure 8 days is enough?
I still see a few dates outbound late June under $1000 r/t. Is it worth it to you to move it up a week, and cut a day to get in a $987 r/t fare to Barcelona (Delta, nonstop)?
How about getting even more flexible to get into a $793 fare? Madrid, Air Canada connecting at Toronto each way, Jun 27-July 7. Similar to this, but open jaw Heathrow/Madrid $782 Air Canada. Interested? I’m surprised fares this low are holding on from ATL this far into summer.
Thanks for the responses. We really need to travel July 1-10. I have a strict work schedule and utilizing July 4th holiday really helps. I know this is peak season and we shouldnt expect good airfare deals. We have refined our trip a bit…our dream itinerary is to fly into Munich direct from Atlanta, spend 3 days their seeing castles and museums, beer gardens…etc. Then, take a short train to Salzberg and spend 2 days there and then take an overnight train to Prague and spend 3 days there. Fly back direct from Prague to Atlanta. We are young and active, so traveling like this isn’t an issue. Right now, the best deal is $1580 for this on Delta. We could also reverse the route if the flights were cheaper. Fares went up on Friday right when I was trying to book! I am trying to hold out until Tues bc I have heard fares are typically higher on weekends. Should I go ahead and plunk down $1580 each? I am very persistant when it comes to searching everyday.
I found some good deals out of NYC to Europe on Delta’s website. They are running from $850-1200 to some good cities. We would have to spend $350 to get to NYC and lose the time connecting. I searched Air Canada and they have some decent deals, but they all go through Toronto and the flight duration is LONG! Not worth it.
Should I try and wait till Tuesday and see if fares drop at all? Thanks once again for all the help!
If I was booking this for myself, given the information you presented, I think I’d have little to lose by holding out until mid-week. Meantime, have you checked consolidators? See our new user thread pinned @ top of this forum for links to some.
I agree Do…I am going to hold out and see if fares drop. If the price gets around $1200 or less, I am going to pull the trigger. We are thinking of doing 3 days in Munich to see some castles and a museum and drink some beer and then head to Berchtesgaden for a day trip and then stay 2 nights in Salzburg….then take a shuttle bus or train to Prague and spend 3 nights there and fly back from Prague. Does this sound fun? I know it is alot of traveling, but we are young and ready to go! Do you think a fare of $1200 is reasonable for our trip? Thanks!
Don….where is the consolidators link? I can’t find it.
I found the consolidators websites and checked a few and the prices weren’t any better.
There isn’t a true “overnight” train from Salzburg to Prague… What did you have in mind for that leg?
Oldlady…We are thinking of taking a shuttle bus that stops in Cesky Krumlov for a few hours. It is around $120 USD. Or we may take a train for around $50 euros. The only problem with the train is it is 6 hrs long and they seem to all leave mid day. We don’t want to waste most of our day on a train. Any ideas?
On a different note, airfares are still high for our dates…maybe it is because this is a holiday weekend. One would think that most people would not be paying these high prices with the economy being in bad shape. I just can’t justify paying almost $1600 to get to Europe. Heck last year, I saw flights for less than half that! I know the price of oil is higher, but that can’t justify $1600+ prices when the world’s economy hasn’t really recovered from the recession.
You have to be flexible to get the best airfares.
While $1600 is high, anything under $1000 for a departure after mid-June has been rare for the last two or three years. Hope things come down for you after the weekend.
I would probably take a morning train to Vienna, spend most of the day there and then take a late afternoon/evening train to Prague.
Thanks oldlady and augustin25…I like the idea of taking amorning train to Vienna and spend several hrs there and then heading to Prague. Most importantly, we need to find a flight asap! The direct flight from ATL to Munich and from Prague to Atlanta went up more this morning to $1646. We aren’t expecting flights below $1000 during these dates. I am hoping to get something around $1100ish. Heck, at this point, I might even jump on $1300. Am I crazy…our other dream itinerary would be to fly into Barcelona and out of Zurich//Florence/Rome/Paris. We obviously prefer direct flights, but would take a one stopper if the layover wasn’t more than a few hrs. I have already been to Paris/Belgium/Netherlands….So we were kind of wanting to visit new countries. I am going to keep searching. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I’d still hold out hope you’ll see things drop a little tonight/tomorrow. I know how hard it is to balance price with being able to fly direct and into a certain pair of cities. Are you open to Madrid at all? Running searches using your dates and combos of a bunch of European cities, the cheapest flights I’m finding ($1400’s) for your dates all include Madrid.
Your Friday departure is killing you. There are fares below $1000 leaving 6/30.
Augustin25…We are going to purchase today or tomorrow. I just checked on Kayak leaving on 6/30 and returning 7/10 and fares are high for a reasonable flight. All of the flights had a long flight duration…around 24 hrs. Where are you seeing flights below $1000? What site? We would greatly prefer a direct flight or one with a short connection into Munich and out of Prague. Or into Munich and out of Barcelona. We found a really good fare on Ryan air from Munich to barcelona that we could take if we could fly out of Barcelona. Thanks again for your help.
Yahoo! I found a good deal! I booked it for Thurs, June 30 out of Atlanta with a one 1 hr stop in Amsterdam…then on to Munich. Our return flight is from Prague to Atlanta with a 2 hr layover in Amsterdam. We got it for $941 each on Delta including everything!
Now we need to figure out a fun itinerary. Maybe Fri, Sat, Sun in Munich and seeing castles close by. Monday morning, short train ride to Berchtesgaden and check out the town and do a pretty hike. Tues morning, train to Salzburg…do the sound of music tour for my wife. Check out the castle overlooking the city on Wed and check out the town. Early Thurs morning, train to Prague. Spend Thurs, Fri and Sat in Prague. Fly out Sun morning! We may stop in Vienna on the way to break up the train ride and to walk around Vienna. Is it worth stopping in Vienna or should we just continue on to Prague? I saw where the train ride is around 6 hrs from Salzburg to Prague. Thanks
While I don’t care for Vienna, breaking the trip there has it’s advantages. Total time in transit is probably less than going direct.
East was East and West was West and for decades they just barely met in Vienna. You arrive as Westbanhof and the fastest and easiest trains to Prague leave from either Meidling or Sudbanhof. Getting between West and South isn’t easy and neither is really well located from a tourist standpoint. Meidling is at least closer to a central location.
I think we are going to skip Vienna. We are debating skipping Berchtesgaden on our way to Salzburg. Is Berchtesgaden that different from Salzburg? I know they are only a few minutes away from eachother. Thanks
Glad to hear you found a good fare! Enjoy your trip.
