Are you going by yourself? Just curious. I went by myself in 1998, and these are the ways I found fun things.

I made travel friends along the way, whether in train car, on buses or because they were staying in adjacent pension rooms or IN the same room as I was in.

Barcelona – Maremagnum clubs are the best – I went with people I met and roomed with at Pension Fernando. There is also a place off Las Ramblas called the Black Sheep (Oveja Negra) and look for a bar that serves absinthe – a clearly memorable moment. The one I remember going to is Marsella Bar [Carrer de Sant Pau 65 (93/ 442-7263).
Metro stop: Passeig de Gràcia]- Google it and read reviews. Bring a friend in case you can’t handle the absinthe intoxication. http://www.blather.n… is an interesting resource.

Madrid – Believe it or not, you really won’t have a problem finding places to have fun in Madrid. Near central metro stations, and in the city square/area around the Puerto del Sol metro station, there will be people handing out flyers and cards to get into clubs. Sometimes the advertisements will include free cover charge or one free drink with payment of cover charge. This is an expensive way, but it can be done. A lot of clubs are private clubs, with the best tables in restricted areas, and which require that you buy the whole bottle of alcohol. As a woman, I never had a problem getting into these places, though you may have a tougher time since you are a man.

Valencia – The town square late at night, or the restaurant area near the Cathedral are two places that are fun after hours. Make sure to have some real paella here; the outdoor cafes make delicious, inexpensive paella. I was only here for two nights, so I didn’t do much.

My total trip itinerary was (cheap flight to)Paris-Madrid (train)-Valencia(bus)-Barcelona (bus)-Paris. I returned from Spain into Paris on the first day of the 98 World Cup. All I can say about that was that it was awesome, Brazilians are a crazy bunch, and the Scots are a rowdy crew that aren’t cheap when they’re getting a single girl drunk!

Email me if you have any questions about those places in Espana.

PS- just found this thread, with Madrid suggestions:

There is a great club in Madrid that has the decor of a palace but the energy of a great dance floor. Plays different spanish music (rock, pop, traditional, etc.) in different rooms.

Definately do one night at the Palacio de Gaviria
