Hi,
I’ll be traveling by train from Madrid to Barcelona on July 4, 2010 (that date is set as we have our itinerary finalized and hostels booked). I was under the impression that it would be cheaper to book online in advance, but as of now I’m not seeing any deals for this route. I checked a variety of different dates just to check and all look like the price is the same price as the station price (I’m using Renfe to get my info, BTW). Does anyone know how frequently sales run for this route? Should I just check the website every day to see if the price drops?
Obviously I’d really love to save some money on this route- I’m used to Italian rail prices and I can’t believe how much more expensive other routes are! I’m fine with committing to a firm departure time if it saves money.

Any info would be very helpful! thanks.

There are two types of reduced fares available on the Renfe website, Web fares and Estrella fares. For some reason the Web fares aren’t available for July 4th (they’re there for dates before and after) and there are fewer trains listed than for other Sundays. I do see Estrella fares, with many high-speed AVE trains available for 68 euros in tourist class instead of the standard fares that are over 100. Maybe wait a few days and see if the Web fares show up.

Thanks for the info. For some reason, I wasn’t seeing any Web or Estrella fares at all last night for really any date I plugged in. Today, I went back and did the same and they are showing up- I’m not sure what I was doing wrong yesterday. Anyways, thanks!

Also- do you know if when I purchase my tickets, they will print out at home or will I need to pick them up at the station?

I’m not sure about Spain, but in other countries it depends on the specific train you choose. On some you can go “ticketless” and carry a confirmation number or e-ticket receipt you print out at home. Others require that you use your confirmation number to print at an automated kiosk, or to pick up at a ticket window. You may not be able to purchase on-line if the only option available for your train is to mail you a ticket. Most national rail companies won’t mail internationally.

You should get a PDF file of your tickets that you can print yourself; I always have.
