Mauthausen Concentration Camp from Vienna
Thu, 05/05/2011 - 16:24
I am trying to figure out the best way to get to Mauthausen Concentration Camp for a visit from Vienna. there does not seem to be a tour from Vienna and the train seems to be complicated to get out there. Is it hard to drive in Austria? should I rent a car for the day and drive out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am leaving from Dallas with $5000 for 10 days

The train from Vienna to Mauthausen does not seem to be terribly complicated — about 2 hours with a single connection, but I think you need to take a cab to actually get to the camp from the station. An old post at trip advisor indicates that driving will take nearly as long.
I don’t think you will find driving in Austria difficult — once you get out of Vienna. Driving in Vienna Would, IMO, be a nightmare. Mauthausen is west of Vienna and the airport is East, but that might be the easiest place to pick up a car even if it adds the complication of getting to the airport. It looks pretty straight forward from the airport on map quest as the routing is major highways that skirt the south side of town.
