Mexico in Dec 2005
Sun, 04/03/2005 - 22:15
Hey I am a 22yo female from Aus and I will be travelling to Mexico for two weeks in December after travelling in UK/Europe for 6 months. If anyone has any good travel tips or advice on where to go (not cancun), or if anyone is going to be there when I am let me know!!

Mexico is great (and I’ve NEVER been to Cancun)!!! With two weeks, I’d fly into Mexico City, and spend four days in the Distrito Federal (including the requisite day trip to Teotihuacan and the Basilica de Guadalupe). A popular backpacker route from there is to head southeast to Oaxaca (try and stop off at Puebla/Cholula for one or two days en route). Spend three days in and around Oaxaca, then head due south to Puerto Escondido for some of the warmest ocean water ever. Depending how long you wish to tool in/around P.E., you can either A) backtrack to Mexico City via Acapulco (two or three days) or B) continue heading east towards San Cristobal de las Casas (I haven’t been there myself, but most backpackers seem to like it). From there you are about 7 hours from Palenque, which I’m told is among the best Mayan sites. Assuming you will be leaving Mexico from the same place as you arrived, you can fly back to Mexico City via Villahermosa…or something like that. Just don’t short-change Mexico City…it deserves more time than most backpackers give it.
Also think about the Yucatan peninsula. The beaches are amazing… the people are nice… go see the ruins of chichenitza and tulum. They are astounding. You could also take the bus across the border to beliza which has an amazing vibe. They have one radio station’- love FM – and all it plays is reggae. Pretty much describes the place.
Also,, depends on what are you looking for…There are a lot of towns (or small cities) which are really beautiful i.e. San Miguel de Allende, Taxco, Zacatezas…
alenque".. it is like a small stadium with singers, games, drinks… this is very Mexican.. There are Palenques during all year and in different cities…
If you can.. try to go to a "
If you want beach,, I agree… go to "La Peninsula de Yucatan"… also you can go to "Los Cabos" which is on the other side of the country.. Remember that Mexico is extremely big (more or less like Spain, France and Germany together)…. You will have to choose one part of the country and focus on it.
Good Luck
hi kristen, my name is juan carlos, and im a mexican living in mexico city, i think the advice given over here are really good, but as they mention mexico is quite a big country, so if this is your first trip try to focus on one spot, i personally would highly recomend you the south east area of mexico, try to go to this states: veracruz: try to visit the capital veracruz is really nice and has a lot of history on it (first city founded on mexico by hernan cortez), then try to go to catemaco (it is also called the witch land, is really magical, there are areas for making extreme sports like water rapids and stuff like that, try to meet oaxaca, the history is really cool and the people are really nice, try the chocolate over there (it was invented there!) and go to a fabric of "mezcal" wich is like tequila you will have a lot of fun trying the diferent types and believe me you will end totally wasted! is really cool! try also to meet chiapas wich i personally haven’t met but they say is pretty nice, and of course don’t forget to met our capital: mexico city or in spanish: distrito federal, also known as: the land of the "chilangos" that’s how we are called from the mexicans that live in the other states, think that it is the biggest city in the world, with everything you would like to have 24 hrs 365 days a year, we are a very cosmopolite city, and we also have ones of the best night life in the hole world!! cause this city never sleeps!!! just dont follow the stupid tourist information advices and you’ll be fine, if you have any further questions or if you would like some more help from me just let me know and i’ll be glad to help you out!
