My girlfriend and I are planning on heading down to Mexico for a few days during typical spring break time (mid-March). But although we live in Arizona, neither of us have ever been. We want to avoid the typical tourist crowd, though being centered at a beach would be nice. Also, we’ll probably rent a car to get to some more rural locales.

Any advice on places to check out? Either coast is an option. Anyone been to Merida?
