Midwest to Europe Flight
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 20:13
I am trying to find a ticket from the midwest – but am pretty flexible on locations. Would prefer to fly from Indy, Chicago, Detroit, or Cincinnati (even St. Louis). And I am pretty flexible on locations to fly into Europe – England, France, Germany, Italy, Amsterdam – almost wherever.
We can’t leave until the week of June 20 and need to be back before the end of July and would like to stay around 18 to 21 days. But besides departure date we are really flexible on when we leave and when we come back and aren’t picky about flying times.
Even with all of that flexibility I am having trouble finding anything for less than $1000. Would love to find something around $800 (or less of course!). Any ideas or help? Do prices ever go down, or do I need to get the cheapest I can right now and be happy for $1000 before they go up even higher? Thanks for your help.

Have you tried the links and strategies in our new user thread—at the top of this forum?
Transatlantic flights are seasonal. A $500 fare in February becomes an $800 fare in May becomes a $1300+ fare in July. So yes, the do go down, but at this point, you’d need to wait until after mid-August to benefit from some routes starting to drop to Fall “shoulder season” pricing. We’re currently in Spring, also “shoulder season,” runs until May 31 for most routes; you might find a handful still at shoulder season pricing if you depart before mid-June. After that, you’re peak season, and flights are very full.
Summer sales are rare, and when the occasional one happens, usually not very good. You won’t find a $500 fare in Summer if the going price is $1300. It’s nearly as rare to find it for $800, or even $1000. Last summer was an anomaly, and we actually did see some like this, but it was a perfect storm, and that has never happened quite like that in my 14 years of tracking transatlantic flight prices, on an almost-daily basis.
It wouldn’t hurt to sign up for some sale fare alerts if you haven’t already—with Bookingbuddy, Airfarewatchdog, and/or Farecompare. Just don’t hold your breath for a super cheap fare. $900-$1100 based on your criteria, is what I would expect, but of course I do not have a crystal ball, and past sales are no guarantee of future offers.
I see CHI-DUB June 21-July 11 $730 using the links in our new user thread.
