Pitcairn Island, Greenland, Faroe Islands…

Yup, mostly Islands.

I’ve found Pitcairn, and obviously know where Greenland is. Which body of water is Faroe located? Thanks!

North of Norway I believe, but I may have it confused with other islands.

The Shetland Islands are above Scotland and said to be quite remote as well.

There should be more remote islands in the North Sea as well.

As far as practical suggestions go, check out Gimmelwald, Switzerland.

The Faroer are north of the Shetland islands, and south of Island. Peter W went there last year.

I’d love to see some of the islands east and north of Russia – Nova Zembla, Kamchatka, Sachalin, and the smaller ones as well.

As far as mainland Europe goes, Moldova seems to be one of the least visited countries, yet I heard it’s lovely.

The Himalayas, from northern India to Tibet, are remote and fairly non-commercialized.

Antarctica! Though I think you need to be invited to go.

Gimmelwald is not remote by any stretch, sorry. The hostel there is usually overrun with backpackers. It’s a beautiful spot, though, and highly worth checking out.

Alas, the world has few truly remote destinations left. You could try making it to the Arctic Circle in 39 days or something like those nuts explorers… Or you could just accept that there’s bound to be some commercialism in a lot of spots, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see or do or appreciate either.

Yes, and pay a lot of money, too.

A couple of Belgian explorers are crossing the Bering street as we speak. A few years from now, due to global warming, that won’t be possible anymore, and it’s allready very difficult right now.

Thanks everyone for the replies…

anyone been to Bayanzag, Mongolia?

I’m taking the wife on her first trip abroad in July, albeit not "remote" – maybe next time ;oP. Being a military brat I’ve always got the itch to travel…and I think I’ve finally convinced her to "live a little".

Thanks again.

Well I don’t remember anything specific about Bayanzag. I lost my map on which I marked where we went in Mongolia, but I’m pretty sure we did stop there on our trip through the Gobi, which was great. Anywhere in Mongolia is beautiful, and the people are the most wonderful and hospitable I’ve ever met.

It’s not Europe, but I highly endorse Myanmar, just a short plane ride from Bangkok. Enough infrastructure to be do-able (with enough pain to make it interesting!) and an absence of Westernization. Lovely people, at least the ones who aren’t in the government. There are some photos on my website.

i think macedonia sounds nice and has nice rivers. i know people here will hate this comment (a professor i had said this) but i hear it’s a poor man’s greece. the professor also said that thousands of years ago, the macedonians were like the "hillbilly greeks". not my words though.
