Movies that make you wanna travel
Sun, 05/08/2005 - 19:08
Hey Gang,
Just a fun little thread…
Does anyone have any favourite movies that make them want to visit a particular country/region. I think Under the Tuscan Sun is a good example. Eurotrip on the other hand was garbagio.
Cheers!
Before Sunrise, with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
(Yes, I’m told the sequel, Before Sunset, is just as good or maybe even better. But I’ve opted not to watch it yet, because I kind of like not knowing what happened to the characters.)
If you wanna see Italy and you’re a bit of a romantic….see "Only You" with Marissa Tomei
Check out Motorcycle Diaries (although it’s about South America)
The Talented Mr. Ripley – Venice, Rome, Amalfi coast – gorgeous shots of gorgeous places
Swept Away – (the older version is way better)- Sardinia – sun and sea (have not been here but would like to some day)
Small Change (Truffaut)- filmed in Thiers, Puy de Dome, south central France, lovely area
Eurotrip is idiotic but I laughed quite a bit. While the cinemotography was not exactly evocative, the hostel from hell scene at the end credits brought back memories
Scotty Doesn’t Know!
Mr. Ripley is a good suggestion…
Also, I like these:
1. RONIN : R. Deniro & Jean Reno
2. EUROPEAN VACATION: Chase, DeAngelo
3. BOURNE ID & SUPREMACY: Matt Damon
4. Several James Bond "007" Movies come to mind…
5. FROM HELL: Johhny Depp (Great setting in 1880’s London, actually filmed in Prague)..

How can you forget Eurotrip! I loved watching that movie while I planned my trip.
Agree with Before Sunrise
The Beach
Mission Impossible (set in Prague)
Cassablanca, lol
thats all i got off the top off my head
The 6th Day starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and crew: So much of the dark side of the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Savvy, I say.
French Kiss – wine region of South France
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – Monaco/French Riviera
And I cannot BELIEVE noone has mentioned The Sound of Music yet! (Salzburg and any alpine region really)
Stealing Beauty (Tuscany)
Out of Africa (Kenya)
Brokedown Palace (Thailand)
* Amelie – Paris
* Roman Holiday
i now really want to see a lot of the movies peopel already mentioned! my list:
the motorcycle diaries- south america
european vacation- western europe
french kiss- france (loved that movie too)
an american warewolf in london-london and the cotswalds
before sunset- though i was bored out of my mind in the movie itself
sliding doors- london
bridget jones- london
the matchmaker- ireland
me without you- london
all the little animals- england
That movie is my weakness. I friggin love that movie, especially when they are with the family in the wine region
My favorite movie that gives me butterflys in my stomach to travel is Lost in Translation. I guess it worked, because I’m moving to Japan in 2 months….
Operation Daybreak- a WWII film based on a true story, a good bit of it filmed in Prague in the ’70’s where the story took place.
http://movies2.nytim…
My favorites, in no particular order. Several of them have already been mentioned:
Amelie (magical Paris)
Mission: Impossible (gothic, mysterious Prague)
Roman Holiday (duh)
Eurotrip (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome)
The Motorcycle Diaries (Argentina, Chile, Peru)
Bossa Nova (sexy Rio)
Before Sunrise (the hidden corners of Vienna)
Before Sunset (the neighborhoods and Seine River of Paris)
Everyone Says I Love You (Venice and Paris)
ah, many of my favorites have been listed!
Only You
Roman Holiday
Before Sunrise/Sunset
Brokedown Palace
The Beach
Motorcycle Diaries
Talented Mr. Ripley
Lost in Translation
Bourne Supremacy
Mission Impossible
Y Tu Mama Tambien
L’Auberge Espagnole
I don’t know the title (the long way around?) but the documentary of Ewan MacGregor and his pal riding their motorcycles around the world wins for me.
not a movie, but the Globe Trekker series (formerly Lonely Planet) on PBS always gets me salivating for the open road
I second the Globe Trekker series. Each time I watch it, I’m green with envy
Under the Tuscan sun
Globe Trekker series
Talented Mr. Ripley
Globe Trekker series
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Seeing Mission Impossible 2 made me really want to go to Seville and now it looks like I’m going to.
Watching The Lord of the Rings always makes me want to travel. No where in particular (though a pilgrimage to NZ is certainly on the cards) it just makes me want to take on a huge quest and set out onto the road- think that might just be the soundtrack.
Pirates of the Caribean always leaves me with a craving for Open water, Jhonny Depp and a juicy apple (in that order!)
Also The last Samurai makes me wish I lived in 19th century Japan. I would have kicked ass with a sword.
Fahrenheit 911.
whats wrong with carry on camping?
EUROTRIP
the italian job
bridget jones
lost in translation
le divorce
amelie
oceans twelve
swept away
talented mr ripley
james bond films
Watch the scene in ‘Rules Of Attraction’ about the character who spends the semester in Europe, it is only about a 5 minute long scene, but it is incredible. The cinematography and everything. I guarantee it will make anyone want to backpack Europe.
I’d forgotten about that scene, Lipton… thanks!
That was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The Europe sequence was its only redeeming feature.
L’Auberge Espagnole. hands down
Makes me want to do it all over again.
Maybe I will. hehehe. The main character in the movie was a year older than I am now.

hey LTB, I love that movie too – did you know the sequel is being filmed now? Same main character too!
MISSION IMP. – Good one!
MunichBeerBoy
Yeah, after I watched L’Auberge Espagnole I changed some dates to
include Barcelona…. ITS AWESOME!!!!! a good movie for "young college student backpacker partier" type people
And I recently saw Ocean’s Twelve, the scenery of Amsterdam is
awesome.
These two really made me say "I CAN"T WAIT!!"
Nevermind movies, how about my Tuesday night favourite The Amazing Race. That show gets me in the mood to travel every week. I definitely got the bug to go again from that. So we booked on Monday and leave on Saturday.
So true about Amazing Race & GlobeTrekker. Both are firmly set into my Tivo. In fact I’ve never missed a single AR episode, and I’m getting really into GlobeTrekker now that I have TIVO.
It was watching a recent GlobeTrekker on Ecuador that gave me a new bug to want to travel to S. America actually!!!

Hope, is this true?
I hope it doesn’t ruin part 1, but I’m looking forward to it. Usually "sequels" are a disaster…few movies can pull it off.

Under the Tuscan Sun
My House in Umbria
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Death In Venice
Bourne – Both of them
Gladiator
French Kiss
La Dolce Vita
Roman Holiday
Il Postino
Chocolat
Euro Trip was funny – the Creepy guy on the train – I Think I met him!
Eurotrip was pretty good, but it didn’t make me want to travel.
Thanks bamjoker (newbie), {j/k} for adding this one. Rented it and re-watched it this evening for the first time in years and now I am even more pumped about my first visit to Prague on Tuesday.
Ya… Italian Job (both old and new versions) make me miss the Italian Alps… sigh.
Did any body see a very long engagment, that film with audrey tautou? had me dreaming of the french countryside.
As for the amazing race, i loved the latest season where the contestants visited argentina and other south american countries. after europe, i’m definitely going to hit some of those places.
How has no one mentioned..
JUST MARRIED!!!
That’s because anything with Arseton Kucher in it – does not really count! Real actors only! He should have just stuck with the extremely dumb & dorky role on That 70’s show… Fit’s him just right…
MunichBeerBoy
Yet it’s ok for everyone to mention Eurotrip?
My idea of traveling is about having fun and making memories. Plus any movies with the smart cars in them get a giggle and a thumbs up from me.
Hello Everyone,
You guys pretty much covered it.
What about The Transporter, takes place in Mediterranean France. A bit violent (action film) but pretty scenery.
A few people mentioned ‘National Lampoons European Vacation’.
The first time I went on an inter-rail trip around Europe that one was in my mind a lot, especially the parts where they’re in Paris and the Alps (‘the hills are alive with the sound of Griswold’ dream sequence).
The main films that make me want to travel are epics with sweeping landscapes, and adventure films set in impressive locations.
I can’t think of that many offhand that make me want to see Europe.
so many great suggestions…Here’s a few more that I didn’t see listed.
The Saint
Amedeus
The Red Violin
Vanity Fair
The Matchmaker
anything Jane Austin or Bronte made into a movie.
Run Lola Run – Berlin
also,
Goodbye, Lenin!—Berlin
I wouldn’t say it makes me want to travel, but National Lampoon’s European Vacation is funny because it reminds me of Europe in the 80s. Even though I was in my single digits then, the scene when Rusty is trying to find something good to watch on TV in their London hotel (cheeese) reminded me of the limited TV choices back then in Europe. It’s a tad exaggerated in the movie, but funny.
For those of you who have spent an extended period of time in Europe (lived/studied/worked there) you should definitely watch L’Auberge Espagnole.
beach-lunch-siesta-beach-shower-dinner-nightlife-repeat
lol european vacation is one of my fav. movies. my fav scene is the one where they want a "classic french meal" in paris and the chefs just cook tv dinners and throw on french flags! classic movie and calrk grizwald reminds me of my dad!
Aside from the many that have already been mentioned…
"Belle de Jour" is an interesting movie made in 1967 w/ Catherine Deneuve as a Doctors wife in Paris who due to whatever reasons feels the need to work for a Madame in a whorehouse while her husband is working in the day….her character is so seemingly prim yet she desires the life of a whore and the many odd experiences that entails. It presents a moody Paris…an edgy Paris…and despite the plot, its not as dark as you’d think, although there is a darkness which underlines much of the wit and circumstance.
I was just watching "The Omen" and that made me want to hightail my ass to Rome in search for clues as to the Antichrists whereabouts
There is this movie that I watched once more than 10 years ago. I was about 9 or 10 years old at that time and it made me think of going to Europe when I’m older. I don’t know the title of the movie so I was hoping for any of you guys to tell me. It’s a story of a group of young Americans who went to Europe to study for a year (I think it was in Paris). The only thing I remember from the movie was near the end when their parents decided to visit them unannounced. The end scene was when a couple for going up on an escalator in Charles De Gaulle airport. I can’t remember the entire story so I was hoping if anyone of you here knows what movie I am talking about.
shoot! i know what you are talking about. it was kinda like a "study abroad" version of the breakfast club where a couple ends up in greece. i forgot the name too.
