MUC, VIE, ZRH, from CHS, CLT, ATL, TPA in July
Mon, 05/24/2010 - 13:42
Hi,
This is my first post here. I usually fly to Europe about twice a year and in the past 6 years or so I have always been able to find some sort of a reasonable deal. For example, last summer we flew from IAD to MUC between June 10 and August 10 and paid $2000 for 4 tickets. When we fly out of CHS, we usually pay about $680 per ticket.
Anyways, this summer, I am not able to find ANYTHING below $800. I would like to fly between June 30 and July 10th and return between July 30th and August 10th. At least 4 weeks.
I really need to stay below $800 per ticket incl everything. I need 1 adult (age 28) and 2 kids (between 2-11). Most of the time it’s the same price anyway though for the kids.
Best to fly out is CHS, then CLT, then ATL, then TPA. Other little airports in South carolina or North Carolina of course would work too (Columbia, Raleigh, Greenville, etc) IAD is really far and only works if it is extremely cheap (see example above). Same with any of the north eastern airports like New York or Boston. It would work but has to be below $600 or so for a ticket because it will be about $200 for me to fly from CHS to any of these airports.
I need to fly into MUC. Alternatively VIE or ZRH. Final destination is INN, but flights into INN are really expensive usually and it is only a 2 hour car drive from Munich. Also Budapest may work if there is a great deal, or anything with a 5 hour car drive radius from Innsbruck, Austria. So Milan, Vienna, Zurich, Munich..
If anybody has found any deals for this summer, I would love to hear about it. So far it looks like this would be the first year in 6 that I cant go because flights are just ridiculously expensive.
Best Regards
Florian
Start with the sources and tips in our new user thread—top of this forum. Where did you already check (so we do not repeat efforts)?
I usually do kayak, cheapoair etc but after reading the new user thread I tried bookingbuddy and played around with the ITA web site search for a little. I looked at flight.com and I usually browse travellzoo every week. I wasnt able to find anything anywhere. I also signed up with a air fare alerts. So far, nothing.
Under $800 looks to be almost impossible this year. I started watching fares out of CLT, CAE, and CHS back in November for my brother for late May/early June departures and after December found almost nothing under $800.
I am not a ‘cheap flight expert’ but I have always been able to find SOMETHING.. but this year,.. crazy!
@augustin25 – I can report exactly the same. Not able to find any good deals. Not even really from the big cities that often have great deals.
Sometimes I try to look for flights from european web sites. that’s how I found that amazing deal last year. For some reason that is cheaper sometimes.
Anybody??
Last summer was an anomaly. Normally, a $500 airfare in November = $800 in May = $1200 in July. Season affects transatlantic airfare greatly. Which European websites did you book great deals from? I check them occasionally, but hardly ever find Europe-based sellers with something better originating in the US. One brief exception: Danish-based Momondo.com has come up with some decent US-originating transatlantic fares for me recently.
I see a 27 day itin. TPA-ZRH for $996.
Also FLL-INN $943 Jul 9-Aug 10.
What web site did you use to find the FLL – INN price? That would almost be an acceptable price, only for the fact that I would be at my final destination.
I cant remember the name of the travel agency that I booked the flight with last summer. I will dig through my email from last year. I know it was a german travel agency though. Not opodo.de though. something else.
My only hope is that somebody will come out with a special ..
Condor.com. I’ve seen other sources with their tickets cheaper earlier in the season, so shop this itinerary around with BookingBuddy and the consolidators to see if you can do better.
Did you by chance go from Florida last time? Because LTUr.de has Air Berlin (formerly LTU) one-ways often cheaper than other options if you mix/match and are flexible. A search with AirBerlin.com sometimes does not find them quite as cheap at LTUr.de on the same flights… and vice-versa.
No, I didnt go from Florida. Last summer I flew from IAD. That was really cheap. So even rending a car and driving from CHS to IAD was well worth it. In the past years we either flew CLT or CHS. CLT direct with lufthansa to MUC. However, that has not been cheap for the past 2 years, so I have not flown that lately.
Thanks for the condor and air berlin link. they both have good offers. I found MIA to MUC for $2250 for all 3 of us, including everything. Just have to figure out how to get to Miami. might work out though, as we are visiting Tampa in July anyway…
I will keep looking
