Munich to Prague
Sat, 10/01/2005 - 00:07
Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has any tips for travel between these two cities. I’ve checked point to point, railpasses, & airfare. Not really finding anything I would call a good deal. Any tips on where to look would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Greg

What would you call a good deal?I see a youth ticket for as low as 46 eur one way from prague to munich…I guess you could get it cheaper if you took a local train to the border and then bought another ticket into germany but not sure how that would work in this case..You probably could catch a eurolines bus from munich to prague but not sure how much that would cost…I would check out www.diebahn.de for train tickets there is an english button on the front page…

I travelled from Munich to Prague about a month ago on the direct train. I think it was at about 6:45 AM. The one way ticket cost about 29 Euros and it took about 6 hrs. I thought that was a pretty good price.
Watch out though, since the train splits half way. The front cars go to Prague and the last cars go to Leipzig. I didn’t realize this until they came around to check tickets about 2 stops before the split. I was in the back cars and would have been on my way to Leipzig. Luckily we made it up to the front before and got to Prague no problem.
Hey,
Thanks to both of you. I passed the age for youth fares a few years back. So, I am kind of bummed about that. Nivid, where did you find that fare? Where should I look. That sounds awesome! I could certainly go for something like that. I’d appreciate the info.
Thanks again!!
Greg
www.diebahn.de is the german rail online site as I mentioned above. You have 3 direct trains from munich to prague daily..First one leaves at 0644 getting into prague at 1245 cost 49 eur…Then there is a 1644 train that arrives prague at 2245 also costs 49 eur..FInally there is a night train that leaves munich at 2308 and arrives prague at 0815 cost 64 eur…A couchette berth would probably run you another 20 eur..There is no sparnight tickets on this route which are discount night tickets. The night train can save you a few bucks over a nights hotel/hostel plus save you traveling durning the day…However the day trains are cheaper in this case it’s kinda a trade-off

Hey Greg,
That price of 29 Euros is what I paid for my ticket. I didn’t look up any prices onlne. I just bought my ticket the day before I travelled at the train station in Munich. It was a regional train on a weekday morning (I think it was a Thursday), and the guy who sold me the ticket said I didn’t need a reservation, so that may be why the ticket price online is more expensive. There was lots of room on the train, and my friend and I had a whole cabin to ourselves for almost the whole trip. It was also around the 20th?? of August so I would think that that time would be busier then other times of the year. Good luck getting a cheap ticket.
This EUR 29,00 ticket nivid got sounds like one of the summer specials available till 30th August (Summer is low peak time on the trains in Germany).
ThisDB page lists the best options if going by train. These offers are all for the 2 direct regional trains (Munich dep 06:44 and 16:44), which provide the fastest connections:

Thank you so much. I appreciate it. I went to the DB page. Guess I was just having difficulty navigating the site. This is a huge help for me. I will be leaving Saturday and sometime next week making my first trek to Prague!!
Thanks again for all the assistance. I love this site!!
