Just a note to people traveling through the Netherlands this summer. A must see is some of the war memorials throughout. In 04 I visited one in Holten (about an hour train ride from Amsterdam) and again in 05 I returned to Holten as well as visited Groesbeek war memorial(about an hour on train and half hour by bus from Amsterdam). 2005 marked 60 years of liberation for the people of the Netherlands. With this they held ceremoneys throughout the country that I was proud to have a chance to attend. They also held a program called "Welcome back Veterans" It was a chance for the people of the Netherlands to open up their homes to Veterans of WW II during the celebrations. My Great Aunt and Uncle were among the couple of thousand Canadian Vets and I was glad to catch up with them for an afternoon while I was traveling through. These days were among some of my favorite days among my 6 trips over seas to Europe. Plan on spending an hour at least. The gardens are kept very well with many tomb stones having quotes from fallen soldiers famlies. Its also a chance to step back onto Canadian soil to feel a little bit like home again if you are traveling for a long time. Most of the Cemeterys have been donated to Canada. If you can’t make a trip out that far another thing to be sure to check out is The Anne Frank hous in Amsterdam. A chance to tour through the attic where her and her family lived along with others. A real eye opener on what really happened during war times for many people.
