My Summer 2006 Eurotrip experience...
Sat, 12/30/2006 - 21:28
This is my first time back at this site since the beginning of summer, and I’d like to extend my appreciation for everyone who makes it possible. This site and everybody’s advice was a fantastic resource for me to plan my trip of a lifetime. Now it’s time for me to give something back. I took many photos during my backpacking trip of western Europe this summer, and I’m presently putting them online on my website to share my experiences. I don’t know… it’ might be helpful for someone planning their own trip.
http://www.lastpatriot.com/photos/europe.html
I took lots and lots of photos and I have a still have a long way to go.
my email is elselrahc@gmail.com if you’d like to comment.
thanks for you time and good luck!
Charles
hey man great pics. my gf and i r going to most of those cities next summer. how was cananoning? were gonna do that it looks amazing
canyoning was awesome. as i said, i hate water and heights, yet i had a great time. i’d recommend it for anybody looking for a thrill. interlaken was a beautiful place even if you don’t do any of the adventure sports. good luck. happy new year!
I agree great pics, and a nice site too!
I also did a canyoning trip when I was in Interlaken. I went with Alpinraft, and had an amazing time. I’d do it again in a second if I was back there again.
awesome gallery! I just spent the last hour fantasizing about my own trip! What did you find out that that logo with a heart meant?
hey man my gf and i wanna go canyoning. do u remember how much it costs? thanks buddy
It’s pretty expensive to go Canyoning, but I think it’s worth every cent. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime things to do. When I went in August ’05, it cost about 150 CHF (so $150 CAD for me).
Alpin Raft has a website: http://www.alpinraft…
how long where you there? Taking pics was a great idea, i took over 2000, when i was there. But i was there for like 6 months, lol.
yay. nice improvement to the forum… it was always crashing my browser before. anyway… i was on the trip from august 2nd until october 20th. I would’ve loved to do more if i could afford it.

about the heart symbol…
[image]http://www.lastpatriot.com/misc/heart.jpg[/image]
… turns out it’s a superbrand with different names in different parts of the world. who knew? [
thanks! I have not been over there in a few years, but your travelogue brought back some of the very intense feelings I had on my first voyage.
Thanks so much Charles! I have yet to go to Europe, but just reading your journal got me really excited to go~ I can’t wait!!! Thanks for your great insight and really humorous comments along with the awe-inspiring photos!!! Thanks so much!
Kirsten
Wow, those pics were great. One subject you documented that piqued my interest was the volunteer work. How’d you get linked up with that? Ive been looking about for options and projects but cannot find anything definitive or cheap. Any words of advice? Thanks man.
hey everybody,
]
i want to thank you all for the positive response to my pictures. I really felt like it was worth more shared than kept to myself. I’ll try to keep up the hard work. [
about the volunteer work…
the groundwork thing I did in ireland, you can check out on http://www.groundwork.ie
for the one I did in Italy, I found it through http://www.vfp.org … as I illustrated in my journal, that experience wasn’t the best, but don’t let that deter you from doing it through them. they have placements all over the world and the US, and I think my experience was… unique. I paid $250 for the 2 weeks, but they have longer term volunteer opportunities for the same price.
P.S. I just uploaded my pictures from Athens if you’d like to check that out.
-charles
awesome web page.. i can’t wait to make one of these of my own (or at least start it and pretend that i’m going to finish it someday, like with everything else).
any chance the rest of the cities are going to come at some point?
howdy.
I finally updated my website with a photopage of budapest and some places in austria. oh my goodness… i only have about 4 pages left to go. It’s going to be such a relief when i’m finally done!
-charles
hey charles just wanna say ur pics are great and i love seeing the places u went cuz in may ill b heading to most of those places with my gf except greece. but ya dude awesome stuff!!
Wow great pictures, i was just wondering what device you used to upload your pictures. You mentioned you used some sort of hard drive that you uploaded them onto every few days, it sounds like something that would handy to bring with me when i go to europe. Thanks in advance.
PS
Can’t wait to see the rest of your trip.
So you missed out on the riot action in Budapest? Thats a pitty, it made for some wild picts! But I was there for the one during October, for the 50th anniversary of the 1956 uprising. It was really great to learn about the whole history of their valliant attempt to overthrow the soviets, and the fact that if the west would have helped out, Hungry would have probably won its freedom. It was amazing to experience the emotion that really gripped the entire city for this event. I actually met several people who had fled Hungary right after the uprising and were returning for the first time in 50 years!
Here are a few I took
Can’t go that way.

standoff
[image]http://images.travelpod.com/users/rob22/eurotrippin06.1161368760.imgp0585.jpg[/image]
It seems pretty clear why people are angry.
[image]http://images.travelpod.com/users/rob22/eurotrippin06.1161368760.imgp0587.jpg[/image]
the gas wasn’t actually that stong. I think the covering of the face was more a symbolic thing, 50 years ago anyone connected with the uprising was tourtured and sent to Goulogs in the east.
[image]http://images.travelpod.com/users/rob22/eurotrippin06.1161368760.imgp0594.jpg[/image]
This is when things started to get out of hand and I left. Too many dangerous objects flying through the air for me.
[image]http://images.travelpod.com/users/rob22/eurotrippin06.1161368760.imgp0596.jpg[/image]
and here is the tank some guy stole and starting driving through the city. Wish I’d been there to see that!
[image]http://images.travelpod.com/users/rob22/eurotrippin06.1161368760.imgp0474.jpg[/image]
Remembering those who were tortured to death at the museum of terror. This went all the way around the building. I think if people would have been allowed in parliment square to commemorate those who were gunned down 50 years ago, there would have been no riot!

Nice trip, Charles! Your travel buddy Eduardo Giglio was really cute. Is he Italian?
Its called ‘Walls’ over here. The make ice cream.
Howdy everyone,
I just uploaded my page on Paris, and I posted pictures from the Oktoberfest a couple weeks ago if you’d like to check them out. Thanks. Just two more to go!!! whew
-charles
awesome website!
great photos…can you tell me what camera you are using and what size of tripod you are using……i am looking to buy a first tripod (and hopefully better camera) and am looking for advice
London, Paris, Tours, Caen, La Rochelle, Annecy, Genoa, Venice, Florence, Rome
hey man love the website. im going w my girl in may-july and really enjoy looking at ur pics and check like everyother day to see if u have updated lol. i wanna ask if its not too much trouble if u could post or send me pics of u staying in all the hostels. thats prolly my favorite part is looking at the hostels and seeing what life is like there. thanks man
Great photo journal! It really gave me a feel of what I would be experiencing this summer, thanks man!
I made a little movie from the video clips I took during my trip. I was gonna wait until I was done posting my pictures… but I couldn’t resist. It’s dedicated to all the awesome people I met on my trip. It gets pretty corny and sentimental, but that’s the kind of guy i am [

hotoshop helps to breath life back into dead pictures too. I also didn’t use a tripod… just balanced it on rocks, my bag, ledges, the top of my head (it looks silly, it’s much easier to keep your head steady than your hands).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ_MQXvv2cU
Youtube killed the video quality, but I’ll upload a better version to my site later on.
The video was taken with my digital camera… which, by the way, i’ll address the topic right now, was a nikon 7600 (I keep on getting asked this). It’s just a basic point and shoot camera, nothing fancy, almost 2 years old now, not even $150 on ebay. I just took a ton of pictures, and there are bound to be at least some decent ones [

Great movie man! Awsome editing and good music!
Agreed, that was a quality job! Two questions Charles – 1) What score is that? You seem to share my affinity for film music & 2) Ever considered making film? Keep on rockin man.
-JKMiles
Charles,
Terrific posting on your trip through Europe. I have referred several of my friends to it, as there are countless pictures and the commentary was great.
One question – what backpack did you use?
– Clay
Charles, thanks so much for sharing your photos and video. I have a very similar camera, and you’ve given me ideas for improving my pictures. Thanks again. [
]
Great video.
]
This summer on my 3rd Eurotrip, my friend and I are planning on going with video instead of photo. Hopefully we can put all the video together and have it close to as good as yours Charles.[
great job with the video! im suprised you could take so many pictures along with all the videos. nice art work too!
Absolutely love your website & video Charles! They was fantastic! I leave for my trip in about a week and your site got me absolutely pumped. I have to 2nd the question: what music was that playing in your video? You timed everything so well. If my website is half as good as yours I’ll be satisfied. Thanks for sharing everything!
Really nice, TheCharles.
Liked reading about your trip to Montreal. It’s my home town, and it’s interesting to see it through a vistor’s eyes.
Hey y’all,
If you checked out my youtube video and are wondering where the music is from, it’s from Remember the Titans, the football movie starring Denzel Washington. It’s composed by Trevor Rabin who scores a lot of other movies. I got the idea to use it for the video from those highlight montages NBC produces for the olympics at the end of the games. I always found them exciting and heroic sounding. Anyway, thanks for looking, i’m glad you guys enjoy the video.
-charles
whewwwwww…
done. i’m FINALLY done with my photojournal. I’m so glad to be able to put that to rest, put this thread to rest, and move on to my next adventure! It’s been a pleasure sharing it with all of you.
http://lastpatriot.com/photos/europe.html
… I even put the video in there, including a better downloadable version.
Peace out,
charles
WOW …simply amazing Charles.
This is gonig to help sooooooooooooooooooo much.
One question…i was wondering if you could list the Hostels you used in each city…and a quick rating of them.
It would help a bunch
Charles, I just want to say thank you for your photo gallery. It is absolutely amazing! I am leaving for Europe tomorrow (I’m really excited now!) so seeing this is just getting me more pumped. If my site is half as good as yours I’ll be happy. Actually, I noticed you got the High Sierra Railpass which is the backpack I have but I never talked to anyone who used it…glad to hear it worked well for you. Now I have more confidence in it. Well, Talk to you in 2 months!
-Gabe
Charles again thanks a lot for taking the time to post your experiences, your website was truly an inspiration for me and countless other I am sure, it has been one of the most helpful resources in planning my own Eurotrip!
Keep rockin’ on man!
Kenneth
Sweet.
Been wating to see your London photos. Interested to see what caught your eye there.
Thanks.
Charles, I just wanted to say that your website is amazing. I have enjoyed it as I plan a monthlong trip this summer. Good luck in your future travels.
-Will
hey charles, this is my first post on this site. i’ve been browsing around for a while
lanning my own trip this summer. i want to thank you for taking the time for putting up so many pictures from your trip, it was very helpful. one question, how were you able to take so many pictures? did you burn then onto CDs?
thanks,
nathan
bump…
It’s an old thread, but it was about this time last year that I started planning my summer eurotrip. Maybe this will help out some beginners to this site.
http://www.lastpatriot.com/photos/europe.html
i really love your site, the pictures and the commentary. i’ve looked at it a few times. thanks for putting together such a great site and sharing it with us!
You did a really good job with this, I like the pics with commentary. Very easy to read.
Your site is great. Thanks for sharing it.
Not only am I enjoying looking and reading it but I’m learning quite a bit too.
Thanks so much.
Great job on the pics. Thanks for sharing. I was just wondering whether you had to make all hostel reservations in advance before going on this trip or not. If you did, how long in advance? I was specially interested in Paris, Rome & Interlaken as I am going there end of this month & needed some good advice regarding hostel reservations. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks.
major bumpage… it’s been a while since I visited this site. I’m sure there are a lot of people planning their “trip of a lifetime” right now. Sure my blog is old, but it’s new to somebody! hoping to help out anyone I can!
http://www.lastpatriot.com/photos/europe.html
Wow, I spent a lot of time reading about your trip. Thank you for letting us all have a taste. I’m planning my first trip for this coming April and it helped me on a few things and it certainly added to my excitement.
I was playing around on Eurotrip before I went to bed tonight, and I ended up spending two hours looking at your pictures and reading your captions. You really have a gift for photojournalism! I’ve been to a lot of the places you visited so it was real fun to see what you had to say about them. You should look into a career in taking pictures of/writing sarcastic comments about things. You could make millions.
I’ll second this
I’ve been to a lot of the places on your page dealie, so it was really cool to read some commentary on it. Cheers dude!
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
I can’t belive this thread is back on page one !!!

I have spent ages (and I mean ages) looking for your site to have a look at. I first found it when you first put it online and bookmarked it on my old computer. Since I dont have computer anymore, I’ve spent hours trying to track it down since.
All I could remember was that your name was Charles, you have a sister named Diana and a few other things too. Finally I found your video on youtube and realised that your name was ‘thecharles’, and finally tracked it down; after many key-word searching and general browsing.
P.S – Really good travelogue of your adventure.
Brings back some memories of places I have been myself – love the pictures that I can say “I’ve been there” to.[
