New system for preventing spam
Fri, 09/17/2010 - 14:02
This is how it works.
Editors and Moderators: You now have a block on the right called “Moderators” with a link to “Pending Comments”. Please try to keep it as empty as possible.
In order to validate a comment, click on ‘edit’ and then under ‘Administration’, select Publish and thats it. If you choose to delete a comment in the approval queue, the users account will remained locked.
How the flow works:
- When a new user posts for the first time, their account is locked and the comment is put in the “Pending Comments”.
- The account remains locked until an Editor or Moderator approves the comment.
- When the comment is approved, the users account is unlocked and they are sent an email to notify them.
- The user will still have to enter a CAPTCHA challenge until they become a Trusted Member, at which point they no longer need to enter a CAPTCHA.
I tried to test this functionality as well as I could before rolling it out, but it is possible I missed something. If you think there are problems please comment on this thread (if you can) or email us at feedback@eurotrip.com.
Hopefully this resolves our issues and thank you for your patience…

Thanks, Will. This should solve the problem.

Ok guys, so no worries about what forum you moderate, you can go ahead and publish or delete any comment you want.

Just deleted a single post of the same old spam from TTTTT. Sent the jerk back to 10 points, so this must have been the only one.
Guess that means this is working???
I think it does!

I haven’t seen any new spam. Are the new procedures cutting down on member participation? I don’t see very many members logged on — ‘course there are usually fewer on the weekend.
It is usually slower on the weekend.
My pending items is empty.
Thanks Swill and Mim.
There were 73 guests a couple hours ago with just me and 1 other user logged on. I’ve only seen 1 comment to approve so far today — and it was spam, so of course I deleted it.
I think we’ll have to wait until next week to see if it’s cutting down on contributing users. Thanks guys!

Something that I realize is a bit of an issue is that if you have not Logged Out and Logged In after the change, your account is locked. As soon as existing users log out and back in, your account will be unlocked. Lots of people are automatically logged in from previous sessions and they are going to have issues till they do the actual log out.
I put a banner at the top of the site, so hopefully that will be enough for people to figure out how to get access to the forums again. Let me know if you have any ideas for how to make that easier…

Hey!
i am a new user and i really like your site and how easy it is to organize my trip. but for the past two days i have not been able to add new destinations to the trip. Also the map is not showing up, which shows the destinations i have already picked. I have logged in and out and the problem is still happening. any ideas?

We’re on this. Seems there is a bug in the planner. Will be fixed as soon as possible.

I am sorry. I made another change at the same time i rolled this out that caused this problem.
I have fixed it. Do a ‘Shift + Reload’ on the trip planner page and it should be fixed…
Sorry about this.
