Niagra Falls- Canadian or US side??
Mon, 08/14/2006 - 09:03
Hey,
Planning a trip up to Niagra Falls, and trying to determine which side to stay on. We’ll be going in early Novemeber and it’s a family trip.
Is one side more economical to stay in than the other? Is there a better vareity of restaurants/activities on one side or the other? Like I said it’s a family trip so there won’t really be any clubing/bar hopping time, but we do enjoy eating out.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The view is different from the Canadian side —- there are places where you can look AT the falls as well as at least one place where you’re on top. On the American side you’re on top of the falls — stunning, but not the picture postcard view most people are looking for. I think you will find many more places to stay, eat, visit, etc. on the Canadian side and those places will be closer to the views of the falls. On the American side the national park keeps development a bit further away. I’d stay on the Canadian side, but visit both.
The satellite photos on google maps (pick "hybrid" so it shows the US/Canada boundary, highway and streets, etc.) will give you a good idea of the differences.
I’d also stay on the Canadian side. The views are significantly better. The American doller is not quite like it used to be, but it’s still worth a little more than the Canadian, so that might make things a little cheaper if you visit the Canadian side.
Are you flying in, or driving?? You’ll probably get a better flight deal, flying into the closest American city (Buffalo), than the Canadian one. If you were to fly into Hamilton or Toronto, then you’d have a longer drive.
Thanks for the advice nivid, oldlady.
We will more than likely fly into Buffalo. Toronoto I think would be out of the way, even though I’ll probably take the drive up to see it once there. Besides I have some old co workers I’d like to see when there.
If you really want to admire the beauty of the falls, you can only do it from the Canadian side.
Besides the fall, you can drive down on the edge of the niagara river and about 1 mile you can take the cable car across the river.
At the falls, you can go down and view the falls underneath the rubble. One can also view the falls through the maid of the mist, a cruise that takes you close to the falls. main of the mist also can be taken from the US side.
Enjoy the food at the revolving restaurant overlooking the falls from the highest point in Niagara. It used to be Minolta towers but now the second one also has good food.
A preety litte town across the lake is Niagara on the lake.
Flying to Buffalo is alright but I believe Air canada has many specials to Toronto. There is another Niagara falls airport by the falls in Niagara, US.
Accomodation is quite cheap on the weekends by Buffolo or Amherest about 15 miles from the falls. Grand Island Holiday Inn is also worth it.
Besides all the good food, make sure you go to Anchor Bar, to have a taste of the buffolo wings, that made the name so famous. I can guarentee you that once you have a taste of it, you will be comparing them to the rest of the world. They also sell the sauces at the airport.
Toronto is not too far, but traffic can be a nightmare unless you go on the weekend.
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
Thanks Sam,
I’m going to check out air canada and see what their rates are.
