Whether or not a Eurail pas is “worth it” and which specific pass is best depends on your exact itinerary. There is an extra charge for night trains as overnight trains always require a reservation which isn’t covered by the pass. A reservation in a 6 berth couchette will cost 20 to 30 euros, in a 4 berth 30 to 40 euros. Yea, right. I think you’ll find this travel style absolutely exhausting. I try to limit overnight trains to an average of 1 per week, with no more than 2 in a a 5 day period.

Try using the railsaver tool under the “bookings” tab or in the trip planner for a recommendation on which, if any, railpass is best for your itinerary.

BTW, you’ll find the same or better pricing for a railpass by buying if from this site as eurail.com — which is actually just a travel agency that has the “official” designation.

As oldlady points out, a night train is not a very relaxing experience. The sleep you get isn’t usually very good. Nothing wrong with using a few of them, but I wouldn’t do Milan to Barcelona and then do another long train trip back to Milan just to get on another long train ride to Rome. Prague to Milan & Milan to Barcelona are really long trips, even overnight. Try a flight somewhere in your itinerary; here are some ideas:

1) Fly from Prague to Barcelona, then if you want take a night train to Milan (but I’d take Florence over Milan), then train to Rome.

2) Fly from Prague to Rome, take the train to your destination in northern Italy, then night train to Barcelona and fly home from there.

3) Overnight train from Prague to Milan, night train to Barcelona, but fly to Rome if you want to end there.

If the last two years are any guide for airfares for this summer, you should have better luck finding a cheap ticket that includes Barcelona as one of the cities you fly into or home from.

Ya im been lookin all day at the train routes and that seems like my best option . I figure i can shower in mornin in hostel then ride that night on train. Also if i take train over night will save me some money. I tend to drink a lot lol i like to party so if im in a hostel that night ill prolly go out so right off the top its gonna save me at least 60 euros and give me a day to get ride of a hang over ;} and are train beds un comfortable? Also is my euro rail pass gonna allow me to get on the diff trains? I know i will still have to pay a extra fee for bed but not sure if euro rail is good for the diff lines like i know ill have to use elipsos train line ,city night line, and alegro would my euro rail be good for all 3. Im going to have to look harder into all of this geez so much planing so little time

Train beds are not comfortable – not very wide or long. I’m 5’10” and my feet usually hang off the edge of the mattress part. Your railpass will work on those lines, but you’ll have to pay for reservations and supplements for night trains. The Elipsos supplement is 47 euros for a reclining seat and 71 euros for a tourist class couchette berth.

The reservation on an overnight train costs almost exactly the same as a bunk in a hostel dorm, so you won’t save much money. A few overnight trains have slightly cheaper reclining seats, but most don’t.

Overnight trains should be only booked for an emergency or just an experience. In my past I found overnight train trips tedious, tiring and stinky.

I’ve never had a truly bad experience on an overnight train. However, I don’t usually get a good night’s sleep and I find arriving in a strange city at morning rush hour to be disorienting — particularly if I can’t check into hostel/hotel for a shower and a nap until mid-afternoon.

Except there is no train between Prague and Milan, and I am afraid there is none between Milan and Barcelona.

Yeah, he’ll have to make at least a couple of changes and spend like 15 hours to get between Prague and Milan. There is an overnight train between Milan and Barcelona.

The best option I see from Prague to Milan has a single connection in Vienna. It leaves Prague at 13:39, has a connection of about an hour in Vienna (18:23 to 19:30) and arrives in Milan at 8:25 the next day. Allegro service is between Austria and Italy. I don’t think it includes Czech Rep. The maps you’re looking at just show some of the train routes, while they’re a good general planning tool you need to check schedules to see what reasonably works. This depends on what cities you’re traveling between. Some city pairs have dedicated no-change night trains between them, others will require you to change somewhere along the way. Looks like there is an Amsterdam-Prague train that won’t require a change.

I forgot to mention…

Some of these long and odd overnight train rides will require using two days of a flexi or select railpass. If the train leaves before 19:00 or if there’s a connection before midnight, it will count as two days. This could quickly negate any “savings” from overnight trains. A more reasonable itinerary and the right railpass could save you a bundle.

Looking at your itinerary it doesn’t seem as if a railpass would save you any money as you are only taking, i think its 5 trains? and Milano just seems to be a stopover for you between other destinations. It may be better, and perhaps even cheaper, to look at finding a cheap flight between Prague and Barcelona before taking a train back to Italy.
I’ve taken a few overnight trains myself and as other have said above they are not the most comfortable or restful of trips. and if you are traveling between countries the Customs officials wake you up in the middle of the night to check out your passports as well.

5 trains would usually be enough to make the right railpass pay — a single roundtrip in France is often nearly as expensive as a 5 day select pass. However, given cheap trains in Czech Rep and relatively cheap trains in Spain and Italy (it’s the reservations, not covered by railpass, that are expensive there), I’d agree that a railpass probably won’t help michael949.
