nightclub dress codes
Sun, 07/12/2009 - 03:47
How strict is the dress code for nightclubs across Europe.
Will dark jeans be fine?
How smart do shoes need to be?
With the exception of Russia (you gotta ask oldlady… Russia can be pretty strict from what understand), dress codes for most of Europe is pretty lax, although Europeans always tend to dress more trendy than Americans anyways (with the exception of the Brits). I always hear about some places that are “strict”, but I’ve never experienced it myself. Nice jeans, black shoes, and a print t-shirt got me in everywhere in Europe. It doesn’t have to be expensive clothes. Just look nice.
For the past 5 years or so, dress codes here in the United States have been relaxed too, but around 1999-2003ish, I remember a lot of places in the US used to have dress codes, and it was usually nonsense: you had to wear certain things, like a collared shirt, even if was an ugly cheap flannel shirt you bought at walmart 20 years ago, and all those wash cycles compeltely wrinkled and fucked up the collar, you still fit the dress code…but you could be wearing a tshirt and jeans from Diesel, and they wouldn’t let you in because you didn’t fit the dress code. I never had to deal with any of that in Europe during the same time period. The only thing that happened in Europe back then was the occasional guy (at some of the “strict” clubs) getting turned away because he wore sneakers (I always wear black shoes, unless I’m working out or I’m wearing sandals). These dress codes have pretty much disappeared in the US in the past 5 years or so, I’d say. But Europe has always been more lax: you don’t have to wear specific things, just look nice. And exercise common sense: please don’t wear shorts after sundown.
On the shoes: ask around when you get there, and it may vary by country. Sometime in the mid-2000s, sneakers came in vogue in Europe, so the clubs that were “strict” stopped turning away guys in sneakers during that time. But black shoes (or a nice brown) are always classic, you can never ever go wrong with them, and they’ll look far spiffier with your nice jeans, than sneakers will.

I concur with luv_the_beach. I have been to pretty much at least one club in every city I have been to and the dress code is pretty chill. Just do not wear shorts and/or sandals. Of course there are exceptions to the rule in both ways (In Ibiza I often wore shorts and sandals. In Paris there was a particular club I went to that required dress shoes and a coat). Otherwise, just have fun!

or

be let into clubs in Europe. I am going to be going to a lot of different clubs, and would be wearing designer jeans (diesel) with a designer button up or polo (g-star, diesel). Thanks, Braden

Generally yes, as long as they are kept fairly clean and are in keeping with a smart look, although don’t be surprised if some clubs do not let you in especially in some of the trendier clubs in the likes of London, Paris or Madrid. At the same time there are numerous clubs in these city’s that are not as uptight.

Your clothes: perfectly fine
Shoes: ask around when you get there.
You’re planning to do lots of clubbing, huh.

Yea I am lol. I am just trying to decide whether or not to bring loafers, as I am only bringing a 50L pack…

Some euros in the right hands will get you into any club no matter the dress code. Leave the loafers at home

LOL that’s what I want to hear haha

Of course, some euros in hand at many clubs gets expensive. Go to a second hand store and get some cheap shoes. If they are too much of a problem, then you can trade them, toss ‘em or whatever.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
If I need a pair of dress shoes, I usually just get a pair of cheap black espadrilles

I can guarantee you I won’t be searching for second hand black dress shoes while in Europe. Sort of boots a damper on my outfit haha

I like wearing these types of shoes with nice jeans, they compliment eachother. Been to some clubs in Europe with that combo, do you think it’s a good one/one that will get me in?
