Number of Countries you've been to....
Thu, 09/30/2004 - 11:30
So I was wondering, with all the seasoned travellers on here, how many countries have you been to? I’ll start us off, and post where you’ve been!! I used the defintions from those 100+ country traveler sites, thats why BiH is seperated into two countries.

7)Belgium

Not bad at all guys. Funny thing is, I originally saw this thread on www.flyertalk.com, and I had one of the shorter lists. Check out that site if you are ever bored, makes eurotrip look like amateurs (of course theirs is for a diff. purpose, but still).

Next trip: Russia/Finland, China/Japan or Australia/NZ unless a work project in Bulgaria or Rep. of Georgia comes up before I can afford those expensive destinations.
We had this exact thread in the Pub about a month ago.
35 bitches!
And what delfrio said, this was done already, started by that dashing young rogue, JonADHD I believe!
Georgia rocks!
Yes I did have the exact thread a while ago but who cares Im bored and today is slow going at the bank!

17) Netherlands
18) Belgium
Next up: Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, and Eastern Europe (order to be determined).
All that being said, I don’t think that merely having the longest list should necessarily be the goal of travel. Plenty of people spend 3 hours in a country just to be able to claim to have "been there" or to collect the stamp in their passport.
I don’t find that kind of travel very rewarding or fulfulling. I’ve been back to some of the best places several times, for longer stretches, to see them more in depth. It’s about quality, not quantity.
I’m only going to count the countries I actually set foot on (literally). The numbers might look wacko, but I didn’t want to label countries I visited two or three times with a new number. In order of appearance…

Quebec is a distinct nation! Once these infidelic liberals get voted out in the provincial election we’ll be on our way.
Also, are you aware when immigrating to Canada, if you want to immigrate to PQ you must apply seperately than you would if you want to go to any other part.

Would be interesting to see the number of days spent next to each country. I bet it would be in single digits or even hours per country in most cases (something laughable, in other words), which puts this survey in perspective.
Care to show us all up?
Im only 17, so Im still in school
Glad to hear you have fun at work, I’ve no idea to what im going to do when i grow up…. (If I ever grow up!)
Ahh youth. I miss school all the free time, getting up at noon (dependent on schedule), mass quantities of women. Yup miss it!
Shock! Horror! Take it back!
Yep I did know that (but not firsthand cause I was born here, as were my parents and most of my grandparents… but I’ll never be "Quebecoise" according to the separatists). That’s because Quebec has a ridiculously high amount of independent say over its own affairs… which is why the whole idea of leaving Canada is so dumb.
Quebec is like the broke teenager whose parents give him everything and let him do whatever he wants, and yet he always complains about wanting to move out. But if he ever did move out, he’d have to pay his own bills and make it on his own and he’d come crawling back to his parents within a week.
I agree with you, Segacs – and I promise never, ever to say that phrase again!
That’s a grand idea.
USA – 28 years
Canada – 10 days
Mexico – 15 days
France – 15 days
Luxembourg – 1 day
Belgium – 2 days
The Netherlands – 2 days
Germany – 7 days
Czech Republic – 4 days

Romania – 19 days
Second trip (2004)
England – 2 days
Italy – 1 day
Croatia – 11 days
Montenegro – 3 days
I agree with Segacs. Although this thread is an interesting expirement, it shouldn’t be a pissing contest. It never occurred to me to plan on visiting a country just to say that I’ve been there. That sounds rediculous and is just a waist of time and money.
okay..this is over a lifetime
USA – most of my life
Canada – several times, probably totaling in lifetime 1 month
Mexico – 6 days
Bahamas – 4 days
England – years
Scotland – 2 weeks
Wales – 5 days
France – 2 weeks
Spain – 3 weeks
Portugal – 1 week
Monaco – 1 day
Italy – 2 weeks
Austria – 4 days
Greece – 1 week
Germany – 4 days
India – 1 month
Malaysia – 3 months
Singapore – 3 weeks
Thailand – 1 week
Viet Nam – 5 days
Indonesia – 1 week
Hong Kong – 4 days
Fiji – 3 days
Australia – 2 months
ALright, here it goes:
2. USA – 26 days
3. Panama – 1 day
4. England – 1 day
5. Germany – 15 days
6. Netherlands – 1 day
7. Belgium – 3 days
8. France – 6 days
9. Spain – 5 days
10. Italy – 38 days
1. Mexico
2. Usa
3. Germany
4. Austria
5. Netherlands
6. Czech Republic
Pretty soon…
7. Belize
8. Cuba
…and also the rest of Europe in March!
Duke
Wow, we have a lot of world travelers here! I thought I was good. Still a rookie I guess. So here goes…
1. France
2. Ireland
3. Spain
4. England
5. Mexico
6. Japan
7. Cambodia
8. Thailand
9. Vietnam
10. Singapore
11. Czech Republic
12. Italy
13. Costa Rica
14. El Salvador
15. Holland
16. Panama
17. Alot of states in the U.S. (but I live there so that doesn’t really count)
It’s interesting to see how many people have counted England and Scotland separately (or other parts of the U.K.). I always thought there were just two distinct fully independent countries: the UK and the Republic of Ireland (although there is a high level of "self-rule" in the constituent parts of the U.K.). And then we can argue about the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, etc. But I haven’t been to those and I suspect not too many Eurotrippers have either.
At any rate, my list is:
1. Canada (most provinces and territories)
2. U.S.A. (Alaska and a handful of mostly northern States)
3. Morocco
4. United Kingdom (including Orkney, which really should count extra)
5. France
6. Spain
7. Portugal
8. Switzerland (10 times so far – at least one week per trip)
9. Italy
10. Liechtenstein
11. Austria
12. Germany (7 times)
13. Luxembourg
14. Belgium
15. Netherlands (5 times)
16. Hungary
17. Czech Republic
18. Pre-dissolution Yugoslavia
I’m not sure what to call my last entry. I went into what was then the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia in mid-June, 1991. It was at Sentilj, which is now in Slovenia. However, Slovenia declared its independence 6 days later and became independent after some relatively minor resistance (unfortunately there were fatalities). So for people who seriously count this sort of thing, does this count as "Yugoslavia"? And if I go to Slovenia (or Serbia & Montenegro)now, can I count it as my first time? It would seem so.
And do my pre-1989 trips to "West" Germany count separately from post-reunification Germany? I doubt that, as they were/are both known as the Federal Republic of Germany.
And as a Canadian (temporarily exiled from Christmas Island), Quebec is a part of Canada. Period.
OK, here goes:
Canada – 24 years minus travelling time to other countries!!
US – if you added it up, i’m guessing about half a year or so (b/c of work)
Bahamas – 2 weeks
Dominican Republic – 1 week
Germany – 2 weeks
France – 1 week
Netherlands – 5 days
England – 3 days
Belgium – 1 day
Switzerland – 2 days
Lichenstein – 1 day
Austria – 3 days
That’s all for now but in less than a year I’ll be adding:
Italy 2-3 weeks (including a couple days in San Marino)
and eventually/hopefully:
The rest of the world!!
Matt, what part of Canada are you from?
Great idea about the time in country thing……. Really makes the places matter more (or less

Zontar – I would think that there would be two ways to count a country: Political and geographical. If it’s political, Yugoslavia and Slovenia would count as two countries you’ve visited. But if it’s geographical, then they would only count as one visit no matter what it’s called upon your visit.
Auher – where in Montenegro did you go? Nice place, eh?
Kahunna,
I went to Herceg-Novi, Kotor, & a little in Podgorica. Yeah, it was fantastic. I have a good friend who lives in HN, so I visited up with her, and she took me all around. It’s really amazing how few americans go there, as it’s such a beautiful place. There truly isn’t anything like the Bay of Kotor. I was in Kotor during the Carnival, and the place was crazy.
It’s funny, looks like the both of us have been to many of the same places, and share the same "obsession" for that part of S.E. Europe (Balkans, whatever you want to call it). Do you have any plans to go back this year? I think I am going to take my wife to Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, & maybe a Croatian island. Yet to decide, but I have another Star Alliance Award ticket that would get one of us there for free!
Best,
Alex
Alex,
Yeah – the Bay of Kotor is amazing. I obsessed about it for three years, ever since I first saw it in 2001, until I was able to return in May. I don’t have any upcoming plans to see it again soon. I took a ton of photos of it on my last trip, so those should hold me over for a while.
Here’s on for ya:
http://www.kahunna.n…
Ok, I’ll play too…

Although my list is short, I do hope to make it longer in the near future. I am currently planning a 15-night trip to France and Switzerland for Fall 2005. Luckily I have an end of the year 2004 trip to hold me over until then. I’m addicted to travel in Europe! It’s too bad that my bank and vacation accounts can’t feed my addiction more often!
Don’t I feel like the virgin traveller…
But soon I know, I will scratch my itch and up my list by double!
