Overnight from Prague to Budapest?
Sun, 11/07/2010 - 11:41
Hey guys, I was wondering if you know of any overnight trains from Prague to Budapest? I found this site: http://czech-transpo…
They said there are in fact overnight trains but I couldn’t figure out how to buy the tickets. Do tickets usually sell out? I’d rather buy in advance to make sure we get beds. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I am leaving from NY with $2000 for 21 days

Oh also, would you recommend flying from Prague to Budapest instead? The only problem might be that we are traveling in the winter (~Dec 20th) and I don’t know what would happen if the flight got canceled. Do planes get canceled a lot?

Did you click on the “train tickets” tab? It says that train tickets for trains after December 12th will not be available until December 10. I don’t think you’ll have any problems getting a ticket for a Monday night train 10 days in advance — but I’d do it right away on the 10th as it’s getting close to Christmas. Trains very seldom sell out and I doubt this route is particularly busy other than in summer.
The website you’re using appears to be a travel agency and will probably charge you 30 to 50% more for the ticket and reservation than you’d pay at the station or from the national rail company???? Here’s the link for the Czech’s national rail company website: http://www.cd.cz/ Click on “en” for English. It has a phone number and e-mail contact if you want/need more help. Also try the Hungarian rail company website: http://www.mav-start…
There is a night train from Prague to Budapest in every year’s timetable. I have the 2011 timetable official preview, if it passes without changes, the EuroNight #477 “Metropol” from Berlin to Budapest should leave Prague Main station at 0:05 in the night. I cannot tell the arrival, since this preview only shows times on Czech territory, but usually the trip takes about 8 hours.
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
P.S. Usually it’s sufficient to buy the ticket on the day of departure or just a few days before. The Prague to Budapest leg is used mostly by tourists, not locals. Upon your arrival to Prague, go to any of the four international stations in Prague and buy it. If I may recommend, there is a small travel agency in the building of the Main station, it’s called Wasteels. Their computer is hooked up to the railway reservation system and they issue tickets at the same price as the railway cashiers. Except the personnel at Wasteels speaks fluent English, while rail employees at the rail cash desks often don’t.

Thanks for the information! I guess I’ll wait until I get to Prague to get our tickets then.
