Overnight train + eurail pass=???
Sun, 03/27/2011 - 19:20
My best friend and I are going on a 20-day long pre-college trip to see some of the bigger places in europe. The rough dates are on my trip planner, but basically we are spending time in venice, rome, barcelona, paris, amsterdam, and munich while spending a few hours in florence, monaco, and nice. In order to maximize the time we spend at each of these places, we are looking to maximize the amount of train time we can have overnight. We plan on getting a Eurail pass (not sure if we should get a global or a 5 country and pay for the amsterdam portions seperately—suggestions?), but were wondering 1) if taking a sleeper train costs extra with a pass and if so 2) how much? thanks a lot
I am leaving from San Francisco, CA, USA and traveling for 21 days

All “sleeper trains” require a reservation, which is not covered by the rail pass. Generally it’s 20 to 30 euros for a berth in a 6 berth couchette or 30 to 40 euros for a berth in a 4 berth couchette. Other accommodations are available including private singles with shower which generally cost at least 100 euros. The “hotel trains” are on the high end of the listed prices and may be a bit more expensive.
Look for sparnight and other specials on the individual national rail company websites. The links are in a sticky at the top of this forum and under “transportation” on the “travel tips” tab. The German rail company is the easiest place to buy tickets and reservations and you can generally find the cost of a specific reservation if you go through the purchase process and click “book only extra charge” which will show you the price for “just a reservation” to use with your rail pass. You may find a special as low as 29 euros for ticket and seat reservations or 39 euros for ticket and couchette reservation — cheaper than using a day of the rail pass and paying for a reservation.
