a pack or not a pack...
Tue, 02/22/2005 - 20:04
i am travling to europe for two weeks in september, for the first time ever.(england/scotland/wales) i dont really like backpacks and, as i expect to buy lots of heavey stuff, i wanted to get a pack on wheels. will this be a problem fitting in the compartments on trains or where ever you keep them in hostels? can your pack be any size and any weight? can you leave them in your hostel or do you have to carry them around where ever you go?
or do i need to go out and buy a back pack?
If you do get a wheeled suitcase – make sure it is small. When I was in Spain, an American high school group came on the train with these massive bags and left them in the alley – nobody could move anywhere. It was a nuissance! (and quite embarressing as a fellow American)
The other pitfall of wheeled bags is that many cities in Europe have cobbled streets or steps. The wheels could break off. However, i dont think you will have this problem in the UK.
I absolutely recommend a backpack but its your choice.
In any case, yes, you can leave your bags in the hostel. Some hostels have lockers. For those that dont, do bring a good lock for your luggage.
