Paris-Vallendar could you help please?
Tue, 05/11/2010 - 05:48
Hello, All,
Could you help me to find the best (and cheapest) way to travel from Paris (CDG) to Vallendar (near Koblenz, Germany)? We are arriving to CDG at 8.30 pm on Sunday, 16th May, and it wouldn’t be nice to stay overnight in Paris – unless it is inevitable. I understand that the shortest way to get to Koblenz is from Luxemburg, so we need to take a train or a bus to Luxemburg from Paris and then make a connection to another bus or train to Koblenz, and then from Koblenz to Vallendar… The problem is, neither of us speaks French, I only understand a little. My friend speaks German well, but we need to find our way in Paris first! Please help…
Francesca

According to timetables http://www.bahn.de/i… it looks like you’re not going to make it to Vallendar that night. Shortest connection shows 11+ hours.
The fastest way is probably Thalys (train) from Paris Nord to Koln Haptbanhof: http://www.thalys.co… about 3hrs, 15 mins … and then take an RE (Regional Express) train Koln H to Vallendar, about 1.5 hrs for this part. Unfortunately for you, doesn’t look like Thalys run trains between Paris Nord and Koln after 6pm.
I was in Vallendar in September. The (daytime) train ride down from Koln along the Rhine Valley provided some nice scenery.
Edited: Oops, I read 8:00 AM, not PM. There aren’t any trains directly from CDG other than the two in my post. I’d stay near Gare du Est and leave the next morning.
1. Not speaking French will not be a problem for this.
2. You can leave directly from the train station (make sure you go to the TGV station, not the RER station) in terminal 2 at CDG. You do not need to go into Paris at all. Put CDG in as the departure station in the link to the German rail system (Don’s first link).
3. Best I see is just under 6 hours with 3 connections, CDG to Brussels, Brussels to Koln, Koln to Vallendar. You can leave CDG at 10:10 or 12:35 without going into Paris and you can buy the ticket at the ticket counter in the TGV station. Try the French rail system link if you want to try to buy the ticket on-line in advance. http://www.tgv.com/E…
Thank you very much for your advice and links. It seems we are going to follow Don’s suggestion, from Paris Nord to Koln, and then the Regional Express from Koln to Vallendar. I’ll explore the route through the Internet. It will be my first time in France. And in Germany, too.
