Paul Newman
Wed, 06/11/2008 - 14:13
OK-Maybe I should check my facts first, however-at least 2 different major news organizations are reporting that Paul is down with lung cancer. What a bummer.
I grew up in a time when it was OK to have heroes. Paul was and will always be one of mine.
He was/is and always will be the standard bearer of cool. He invented it. Not Bogart, Brando or Dean, all of whom I recognize and enjoy, nobody elevated an audience (talking films here) like PN.
Guyz of my generation stole from his onscreen personnas. Damn, if I could be just 10% of what the dude was and id be good.
His commitment to his craft, acting was/is just otherworldy. The man was so good at being not only believable but empathetic.
Whether playing a young pool hall slickie boy or over the top alcoholic. Politicos, thieves, ordinary guyz, westerns, he was the ultimate Mans man, and at the same time, the object of every womens devoted admiration.
But much larger than that-His legacy-legend-shall maintain beacause-He WAS/IS ALL THAT!
Look, IMHO, any dude that does his job so extroidinarily well deserves note.
#2. The dude has been married to the same women, we all know who, for over 50 years. Apparently successfully and happily. I think that deserves more than an honorable mention for a bunch of reasons.
#3. Newmans OWN. Hey i’ve always liked this stuff since his first salad dressing. Not only is/has it always been quality products, how can you bitch when ALL the money goes to charity. I’m not claiming to be Mother Thersea here but I’ve never minded spending a couple of extra bucks for quality, and tack on the charity quotient (I believe the primary beneficiary is sick children) and what you got here is a devoted consumer doing his small part for the planet.
#4. OK-He’s over 80 now, but damn if he wasn’t still racing cars in his 70’s. DAMN! The man has always been a stud.
#5. Not a MF$^%&#^&%@#^$@ pretentious bone in his body. A guy that discovered some secret a long time ago. Maybe it’s as simple as,
Living the right way has it’s rewards.
So why can so few of us get it? Namely Moi.
Anyway-If he is sick, and hopefully he isn’t. God bless him and his family. He’s given me and mine , over the years more enjoyment at sharing his work and has been incrediby inspirational on a very personal note (that sentiment I believe is shared with millions)
“Rules?! In a KNIFE fight?!”
So the question is thus-
Anybody else share this view?
That as an actor, sportsman, social activist, philanthropist, husband and family man-and allround HUMAN STUD, he has set the bar to a height that does us all proud?
His salsa sucks. But he’s a good man. He’s an old man and accomplished many things in his life. However he goes out he will be fondly remembered.
And for the record….Brando is the most overrated actor of all time. Newman is far cooler and a better actor.
The Newman’s own salad dressings seemed kind of pathetic and past-it when they first came out—but I really didn’t know who the guy was. I recognize the name, but don’t know much more than that. Hope your hero is ok. Who’s his wife?
OK-I really shouldn’t respond. No i’ll wait and see. Maybe, aw fuck it.
OK-wifey=Joanne Woodward…an accomplished actress in her own right and megaBABE. But I have to thinks you know that.
Mr. Don. I don’t know you and have the utmost respect for the work you do here. You’ve helped me many times with flight info etc…However…
Aww…C’mon…this has got to be a troll.
Paul Newman-probably/argueably the single most recognizeable/accomplished Actor of the 20th century???
Cool Hand Luke, HUD, The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Coler of Money, The Verdict, Exodus etc…ad NO-NAUSEUM INCLUSIVE ????????
BTW-Say what you will, his original Italian Olive oil salad dressing is the shit!
Do we live on the same planet my brother?
Ok, thanks for clarifying. Maybe my parents would know who he is. Is Joanne Woodward that “Mommie Dearest” witch?
No, that was an aging Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest.
One of Joanne Woodward’s more well-known roles was in the original version of Sybil (the story of a young woman’s multi-personalities), which was called The Three Faces of Eve.
I actually like Newman’s Own organic olive oil. The price is fair and the oil is good.
As for Mr. Newman himself, he is a class act and I hope he is able to fight this illness, now that it has become public, in relative privacy.
I enjoyed all the films Jeffro named, but probably my favorites are Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting.
Well, if this story is true, it doesn’t look to good for Mr. Newman.

I just rented Slap Shot a week or so ago. He was really good in that one.
I just heard he died. Didn’t know he had cancer.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
