Pisa

Can anyone tell me if the Leaning Tower of Pisa is still plagued with scaffoling? Last time I was there (April 04) the top of the tower was being worked on. Thanks!

It was plagued with scaffolding in NOV/DEC O4 too! How annoying!
I was there last month and there was no scaffolding in sight. By the way, everybody says Pisa is a disappointment and you should just go to see the tower and leave. I disagree. I thought it was a very cool town. Leave yourself some time to explore the other things Pisa has to offer besides the famous tower.
So would a day be sufficience to see the sites of Pisa? What are some of the other things to see? I’m in the middle of planning my Italian vacation and almost considered skipping Pisa because I’d heard there wasn’t much else to do?
I’m of the opinion that Pisa is a day trip. Maybe spey can expand on what he/she thought there was more to do, but in my opinion the other sights I saw paled in comparision to places in many other Italian cities.
no scaffolding as of July 5, 2005.
make it a DAY TRIP. maybe wander to get a bite to eat after seeing the sights in the square where the tower is…but not much else is spectacular. stay the night in Florence or a more beautiful place like San Gimnignano or Sienna.
Thanks for the info. Going as a day trip from Florence sounds like a good idea.
Its a day trip from Florence, but really only a half day. After a couple hours of walking around there was really nothing left to do but wait for the next train. Consider starting early and adding another town such as San Giomano.
Definitely do San Giomano. It’s way better than Pisa. Cool little ancient walled city. I wouldn’t even bother going to Pisa.
How far is it from Pisa??
Can i visit both in one day Pisa and San Giomano??
Is in possible to make Pisa a one day trip on the way from Rome to Venice ?
It is, but you’d have to switch trains at Florence, about halfway between Rome and Venice. The side trip will add 60 minutes to your journey each way.
My Aunt, Uncle, & Family just returned from a 10 day family trip around Italy, which included Pisa, and there was no scaffolding in their pics. They did mention that there was some sort of restorative work done to it, where 800 and some odd tons of stone were removed from one side to aid it’s stability. Maybe this was why the scaffold-works were in the mix.

I was in Pisa about 2 weeks ago and everything is fine. No construction at all. It’s a pretty touristy place though, and I thought that a half day trip was more than enough.
