places to visit around NAPLES
Sat, 11/27/2004 - 23:19
Hi i am going to visitmy new italian boyfriend in naples in december. Where should i suggest going? outside of italy.
I’ve heard Easter Island is spectacular
How far is Easter Island from Naples?? Do you think it would be possible to squeeze in Naples, Sorrento, Pompei and Easter Island on a day trip from Rome leaving at 6 or 7 in the morning and returning around midnight??
Just an approximation, but you could get to Easter Island in about 0.06 seconds from Naples if traveling at the speed of light.
LOL!!!
Haha. Seriously though. I get the point about easter island but do you think its possible to do Naples, Sorrento and Pompei in a day trip from Rome leaving early in the AM and going back to Rome late??
Seriously, I doubt that you’ll have enough time as a daytrip – haven’t been to Sorrento myself but have a feeling that it is a place where you shouldn’t be rushed. Plus you’ll be there in winter – should get dark earlier.
It seems to me though that those cities are all right in a little cluster. Naples is 140 miles from Rome Sorrento is 10 miles away from Naples and Pompei is 12 miles from Sorrento. Or at least thats what mapquest is showing me
I found Pompeii and Herculaneum a reasonable day trip from Rome in the summer. We had intended to at least wander around a bit of Naples and find some place to eat dinner there on the way back to Rome — we ended up eating in the train station due to late hour and exhaustion. With less daylight in winter, a day trip to Pompeii is reasonable. Even with the short distances you’d have no daylight time to spend in either Sorrento or Naple if you visited Pompeii from Rome. The circum vesuvisus is a relatively slow commuter train that stops at every station and there are about 2 trains each hour. Rome to Naples — 2 hours, Naples to Pompeii 1/2 hour, Pompeii to Sorrento 1/2 hour, Sorrento to Naples 1 hour, Naples to Rome 2 hours. That’s 6 hours plus you’ll have 1/2 to 1 hour in waiting for connections. You’ll want to spend a minimum of 3 hours in Pompeii, 4 or 5 would be better.
Thanks oldlady. Do you know do the trains stop at night or could I catch some red eye at like 1 AM back to Rome?
During the day there are at least 3 trains an hour between Naples and Rome, but I don’t think there are any trains (except maybe 1 VERY slow one) between 22:00 and 4:00. Check trenitalia.com for schedules and pricing.
Eurostar Italia trains are the fastest, but the 10 euro required reservation just about doubles the price over trains that take 1/2 hour longer.
Thanks Oldlady! Another one for ya…how far away from pompei is easter island? Do you think I could hit Pompei and Easter Island in a day if we skip naples and sorrento?
Depends on which way you’re going — with creative use of the fastest military jets and the international date line you might be able to get to Easter Island the day before you left Pompeii — I’ve never been able to figure out if that counts as a railday on your railpass or not.

Ok.
Just thought I’d at least ask. I think we will end up going to Pompei and see naples and sorrento at night if we get a chance! Thanks for the help!
I really love this thread

Where the hell is Easter Island from Pompei? Hours?
Easter Island is in Pacific ocean, it belongs to Chili but is 3500 kilometers away from it
))
Just the initial question seemed a bit strange to me so I answered the first thing which came into my mind
Damn you Andrew Runov!
Ok ok. I need to brush up on my geography!
LMAO at myself! HAHAHA!
Thanks Andrew, Your initial response was a real grin…
BTW, your tips on Pompeii and Herculaneum were most helpful. We had a great day (rain and all) using your suggestions and instructions.
