Planning?

Me and my girlfriend are very keen on moving to europe to work and see the sites, but we have no clue how easy or hard it will be. We don’t want to travel all over but want to settle down in Britain or something. What is required to achieve a job there? Where could we stay for fairly cheap? etc. If you could help with some information we would both be happy. Thanks.
Working Holiday visas would be there first thing you need. What nationality are you? Are you eligible for a Working Holiday Visa in the UK?
I know in Australia you need a minimum of $4500 in your account and need to be able to prove this to get your visa. It will cost you about $105 AUS to get your work visa, and lasts for 2 years.
A UK bank account is another. It can be pretty hard to set one up in the UK unless you have a thousand and one things – Utility bill in your name, lease, letter from your employer etc, some places require you to be a british citizen, and i’ve still had friends who had everything required and still only got an account in the end cause they sat down in the middle of the bank crying – Investigate setting one up from home via Travelex (thomas cook) if you are not making a permanent/semi-permanent home or do not wish the hassle.
There are agencies that can help you get set up over there too with everything. Getting a flat, phone, job etc – for a fee.
Accomodation is pretty expensive in London – Do you wish to set up house in london, or elsewhere in the UK?
What type of work are you looking for?
Were from Canada. We don’t plan on leaving until we both have about 5-10 thousand dollars. We are willing to start anywhere in Europe (preferably english speaking) and its pretty much any kind of work, we just need to have enough money to live down there.
Check out the following links for work…

The following link is also good for accomodation, employment and some of the other bits and pieces you need.

You can also contact agencies in the UK for temp office work etc. As a Canadian, you’re a commonwealth citizen and so are eligible for a 2 year holiday working visa in the UK (England/Scotland/North Ireland) which you’ll need to sort out before you leave home.
Not sure what other countries you’re eligable to work in?
Hope this helps.
KaNad13n, my boyfriend and I will be doing something simmilar to what it seems you would like to do. We are leaving in October for London, but probably not staying there because it is very expensive.
MY recomendations:
1. Get hooked up with the Student Work Abroad Programme (SWAP) You can do this by visiting a Travel Cuts Location – They are usually close to any Univeristy / College. Two web sites: www.travelcuts.ca and www.swap.ca You need not be a "student" to be able to do SWAP Britain.
2. You can choose to register with SWAP and have help from the orientation centres and with visas, etc. OR you can go it alone and regardless you are a Commonweatlh citizen so you are eligable for the 2 year British visa! My b/f and I are resistered for SWAP.. I think it will be nice to have some sort of base over there that can help us with any questions about the odd questions we may have like what do we do about taxes? and setting up bank accounts? and where to stay? where to work? They can help you cover the bases.
3. More about the visa itself – Once it starts it runs for 2 years and within that time you do not have to stay in the UK to can leave and go from britain without it effecting your visa. In other words, it’s completely open enabling you to continue travelling throughout the rest of europe or back home and back without troubles. This is very good.
4. Working in the UK: SWAP says that it takes an average of 4 days to find a job.. but they could mean pub work, because from what I hear that is the easiest to find.. I think that the office jobs pay better, I think that my boyfriend and I are going to try at both! SWAP is not a job finder service, but they do have huge job posting and apartment finding boards in their offices.
5. There are reasonable places to stay outside of London. Alot of those places seem really apealling to me though.. like Brighton, it’s south of London and on the beach.
6. Money – SWAP recommends that you take 2500 $ Can. But We are planning on taking about the same amout that you are saving up for!
I hope I got you on some sort of track, hopfully the right one! I would really like to talk to other people in our circumstances. We are 19years old and this is our first trip too.. if you want to email us or add us to MSN my name is Kathryn and my email is kathrynsimpson_@hotmail.com and Chris is my boyfriend and his email is lasato@hotmail.com.

Hey I would also recommend SWAP! I actually plan on registering for the program as soon as I can find someone to go with…kind of nervous about going alone! Anyways…it sounds like a great program. I want to go to work in Ireland, Scotland and Britain maybe for a few months each (not in any particular order) and then also take time to backpack the rest fo Europe! With SWAP you are totally flexibe to make your home in the UK but travel whenever and wherever. There are different programs to choose from but I think I will choose the Britian/Ireland one because it allows you a 2 year working visa. Well hope that helps..and also if anyone knows anyone else or wants to join me on the SWAP program I would really like to here from them….I am still looking for a travel partner or a group to meet up with. Email me at ashley357_s@hotmail.com..thanks
Ashley,
SWAP has group programs that you can go into for these areas. When you get there you are given orientation with other SWAP participants. There are flat and job posting boards up in the orientation centres. I wouldn’t be to scared of going alone because it is easy to meet nice people doing the same thing once you get there. Plus SWAP people have their own msg baord. I’ll send you an email on the subject, okay?
Kathryn
Hey! Thanks Kathryn that would be great! I would feel a lot better knowing that there are people over there to meet. Also thats just the thing I want to meet nice people….you never know! thanks
