Planning for the Eurotrip City Guide app
Mon, 01/04/2010 - 17:21
Since this has come up in a couple other threads and I don’t want to hijack their threads, I will do a summary here.
We are currently in the planning process for a new feature that we are currently calling the Eurotrip City Guide or Eurotrip Printable Guide. Basically, it would be a way for you to specify what you plan to do in a city or during a trip and then before you leave on your trip you would print it off and it would serve as a trip specific guide book.
Obviously it needs to integrate into the Eurotrip Planner, but I also want to allow people to plan their stay in one city without having to enter their entire trip in the planner, so it will also work as a stand alone app for planning your time in a specific city.
This is a brief overview of what I am planning to do, so if you have questions or comments, please bring it up in the thread.
Phase 1:
Build a City Guide application that allows you to plan your stay in a city. If you know where you want to stay, you can specify a hostel and it will show you the availability for your period of your stay. You will then be able to see on a map where all of the attractions are that you may want to visit and where they are in relation to your hostel. You will be able to select what attractions you want to visit and your printable guide will include information such as addresses, maps, directions to the attractions from your hostel, pricing, etc… Another idea I am toying with is if you do not know where you want to stay but you know what you want to see, you can specify all the attractions you plan to visit and the app will recommend a hostel based on value, reviews and location in relation to the attractions you plan to visit. You will be able to make your City Guide public or private. If your city guide is public and you want feedback, other Eurotrip members will be able to comment on your plan and give you ideas. Eurotrip members will be able to specify if their comments are only for this city guide or if it is generally applicable for the city (eg: “in munich, make sure to checkout xyz”).
Once you have your hostel, attractions, member feedback and such all filled in and you are ready to take your trip, you will be able to print off your City Guide and take it with you.
Let me know if you have additional suggestions…
Phase 2:
Integration of the City Guide into the Eurotrip Planner. Your trip is obviously made up of a bunch of cities. You will want to be able to plan your time in the cities from the trip planner. You will also want to be able to print the guide for your entire eurotrip with one click. You will also want to be able to add an existing City Guide (that you created, or potentially a recommended template) to your trip, so we will allow you to do that as well.
Once this is all complete we would like to be able to offer you:
- Maps for where you are staying as well as all of the places you want to see.
- Details for your hostel and selected attractions such as address, map, price, etc…
- Directions from your hostel to each of the places you want to see.
- Directions from the train station to your hostel.
- The ability to add city specific feedback from the community to your City Guide.
- The ability to search city specific feedback to help with planning your time in a city.
- Suggest hostels based on the things you want to see and what is important to you (distance, price, rating, etc…)
- Suggest attractions based on where you are staying based on your interests (museums, restaurants, price, walking distance, etc…)
- The ability to add City Guides to your Eurotrip (both through the Eurotrip Planner and the City Guide app).
If you think I am missing something that would be helpful to you, please let me know. I am currently in the planning phase for this project, so your feedback would be very helpful to me right now.

It would be tight trying to get it ready for your trip.
I am the only developer here at Eurotrip and I have a laundry list of things on my plate right now. I am hoping to be able to prioritize this feature because I think it would be a great tool for you guys. If I can get this on my short list of things to do, I think I can probably get it ready by the middle of the summer, but since I am still in the planning phase, lots can change still.
Glad that you agree that it will be helpful…

Ah well, that’s too bad. I can’t believe you are doing everything for this site alone. Thumbs up!

We will see how everything plays out in the next few months.
Enjoy your trip.
