Planning a EuroTrip...any advice?
Mon, 09/17/2007 - 15:28
Hello all,
I am a 21 year old living in Charlotte, NC, USA. I’m from Ipswich, England (lived in Germany for awhile as well) and would like to take my girlfriend to Europe sometime in 2008. She has never been out of the USA so I figure I’d try to show her some the coolest (in my opinion) cities Europe has to offer. I’d like to plan a trip as follows:
Depart Arrive
Charlotte, NC London, UK
London, UK Paris, FRA
Paris, FRA Muenchen, GER
Muenchen, GER Charlotte, NC
I would like to stay 3 nights in each location. Does anyone have any advice as to where to start looking for some cheap air-fare?
Danke!
Chris

Well, start in this topic I’d say: http://eurotrip.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=109874
And ofcourse http://flights.eurotrip.com
For lowcost carriers within Europe: http://www.flylc.com/directall-en.asp
London(Gatwick/Luton/Stansted) – Paris (Charles de Gaulle/Beauvais): Ryanair or Easyjet
Paris (Orly) – Muenchen: Air Berlin
Don’t forget the large national carriers, they often have great deals between large hub-airports like London and Paris. (British Airways, Air France/KLM, Lufthansa)
1. She needs to apply for her passport this week. Seriously. Severe backlogs at the US passport agencies. Can dl form and instructions at travel.state.gov and apply via nearest post office accepting applications.
2. You said “sometime in 2008”. Cheapest time for flights will be Jan-Mar, and Nov-Dec. Best combination of price and weather is probably May or Sept., but won’t be as cheap as fares during coldest months. June-Aug. will be ridiculously expensive.
3. USAirways fly nonstops between Charlotte (CLT) and Gatwick (LGW); Lufthansa nonstop between CLT and Munich (MUC). Since USAir and Lufthansa are partner airlines, I would try for nonstop flights if price is similar to other options—to maximize time there, and minimize travel hassles.

Hey Chris, I’m also from Charlotte, NC and planning my trip for March 2008. I’ve just started doing research on it within the past month and am looking to book a flight pretty soon…let me know if you are successful in your search and I’ll return the favor as well! I heard it might be cheaper to fly from major cities such as Raleigh, Washington, or New York but haven’t really priced many yet. What month are you planning on going? Keep in touch.
I was hoping for late March-Early April actually. I was considering leaving from Washington DC or NYC as well, seems to be the most reasonalby priced departure locations…I’ll definatly let you know if I find anything out, good deals ect…
Late March is in many ways the best time to depart.
Charlotte, being a major USAirways hub, puts you in a pretty good position to score a good price on direct flights as suggested by Don. If you are students, be sure to keep an eye www.generationfly.com, Lufthansa’s site for students, occasionally they offer rather good deals (but not right now).
When looking at alternative airports make sure to realistically estimate your cost of getting there and back.
