Hey! I’ve been planning a backpacking trip for a while now and I think we’re planning on going in september of this year 2008 for three weeks. Only thing is, I have no clue how much it’s going to cost, and I really don’t want to get screwed over. I am going with a friend of mine and we’re planning on flying to heathrow from halifax, then starting the trip off in amsterdam and somehow ending up in greece. Need advice.

Ollyver
Have you figured out airfare yet? You can discuss that in Cheap Flights.
Not sure that 3 weeks is enough time to do London all the way down to Greece.
The rule of thumb tends to be Europe will cost anywhere between $50-70 USD a day, maybe more. Backpacks cost $100-$200, maybe more.
You’ll need a passport, that’s approximately $100. link

I agree that Greece is a bit out of the way for a 3 week trip. I personally wouldn’t even consider this.

As far as flights, I’d look at prices to London and then Ryanair or Easyjet ( Ryanair is usually cheaper ) to Amsterdam as that may be cheaper than flying straight into Amsterdam.

I’d recommend going to the library and getting the most up to date guidebook you can get on wherever you want to go to get a better idea of everything ( including costs ).If you’re more specific ( list cities you’re interested in ) it would be easier to estimate costs.

Netherlands is just as much out of the way as Greece is.  Maybe Ollyver_twist wants to focus on Italy and Greece (PERFECT for September) and an additional nearby country (Croatia? Austria? France? Switzerland?).  In this case, Netherands would out of the way, not Greece.

I agree that Greece is out of the way on some posters’ itineraries (people who want to squeeze Greece into an itinerary that stresses northwest Europe: UK, Ireland, Germany, Benelux, etc), but Ollyver_twist hasn’t even given us an itinerary yet.  We only know that he’s interested in both Greece and Amsterdam.

I think it was just that he said he would start in Amsterdam so once you get to the “somehow ending up in Greece” bit Greece seems the country out of the way. You’re definitely right though, Luv_the_beach. I recommend Turkey if he does end up going to Greece and is looking for other countries in the region to visit.

Hi, my wife and I weent to Europe this past September for 4 weeks. It was amazing, We spent time in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris and Rome. I found we had just enough time in each place to really enjoy it and not grow tired of anything.

In regards to cost, there is a lot to consider. It depends what you want to do. My wife and I are pretty laid back people and we didn’t party while we were there, we went to experience the hstory, architecture, and culure. Nothing beat midnight in Rome and having Espresso in an outdoor cafe… or a pint of Guinness in a dingy pub in Ireland.

We planned our rip for over a year and had most everything planned out when we left. That would drive most people crazy but it worked great for us. Our costs were:

Backpacks (2) – $250 total (detachable dypack was a must for us) Mountain Equipment
NorthFace rain Jacket (2)- $380 – was needed in Edinburgh and Dublin
Walking Shoes (2 pair) – $300 – invest in good runners/shoes and break them in
Moneybelts/Locks/ Misc travel necessaries – $200
Pasports – we both already had ours
Flight from Winnipeg to London – $1600 (for both return) – Zoom Airlines
Flights in Europe – $700 (for both) – there a so many economy airlines to try (RyanAir/EasyJet, etc)
Trains in Europe – $200 (only used train in Italy)
Hotels and Appartments – $3000 (we wanted a comfortable place to sleep – can be done cheaper)
City Passes – $400 a great idea if you are going to be in one city for 2-6 days, most come with a trvel card and are so convienent. The London Pass we had paid for its self in a day or two.
Clother/ Food/ Drink – $500
Misc Attraction Exp – $400
Day Trips – $600 – Stonehengh/Bath/Cliffs of Mohr/Mount St. Micheal/Pompeii/ Capri

This is a rough list and some expences can be cut, but we had a great trip, and I have one piece of advise. Just go, have fun, live and experience Europe, its an amazing experience. When its all said and done, it is bad to think that such an opertunity would be missed and for what a couple of grand… what is money.. it comes and it goes. This trip will stay with me and my wife our whole lives..

have fun
B

Sorry guys. This will be my friends first trip to Europe. He wants to go to Amsterdam, myself to Greece. We’ll just have to choose one area over another I guess. Can anyone tell me approximately how many days by train will be needed to cross from Amsterdam to Greece?

I have no idea how long it would take by train but I think a flight would be cheaper ( and obviously faster ). Check Ryanair and Easyjet ( Ryanair is cheaper but don’t think they fly to Greece so you’ll probably have to go with Easyjet ). You can fly from Amsterdam ( or somewhere close ) to Athens, Greece ( or nearby ). Easyjet definitely flies to Athens and also to Istanbul, Turkey ( Istanbul is pretty awesome ), if you wanted to fly in to one and out the other. I don’t know what other places they fly to near Greece besides Bulgaria. With Easyjet it’s no cheaper to fly into one airport and out another so with a limited amount of time you may be best off using different airports.

Hi,

I’m also traveling to Europe in September and can give a quick run down of what I’ve seen so far for airfare.  I’m leaving NYC on September 5th and coming back on October 3rd.

I’ll be flying in and out of Amsterdam and my abbreviated itinerary is as follows:
Amsterdam (1st weekend)
Paris
Madrid
Barcelona (2nd weekend)
Ibiza
French/Italian Riviera
Italy (all over) (3rd Weekend)
Greece (Athens & Santorini)
Munich (Sep. 26-29 for Octoberfest) (4th weekend)
Prague
Berlin
Amsterdam

I’ve been keeping an eye on flights for the last couple months and they’ve been pretty steady in the $800-$900 range for non-stop from NYC to Amsterdam.  I’ve seen a few flights in the $700-$800 range that are 1 stop.  As for major airports in other countries, the cheapest I’ve been able to find is $500-$600 for non-stop from NYC to London.  I haven’t noticed significant savings flying from NYC to any other major airport (Madrid, Bacelona, Rome, Paris, etc.).

As far as places to stay, the hostels will always be your cheapest option.  I would estimate 20-40 EUR&nbsper night per person depending on the city.  A little more and you can get (if you can find) a 2 person room.

I’m not planning on doing the hostel thing, unless I find a cheap room for a single person.  I’ve checked most of the major cities and finding hotel rooms for 80-100 EUR per night is pretty easy (unless there is a big event going on…like Octoberfest).

Hope this was helpful.  Let me know what kind of estimates you’ve come up with while doing your research.  Two heads are always better than 1!

Jeff

Hi Jana,

I’ll be traveling around Europe from September 6th to October 2nd and I’m interested in hearing about some unique places to visit.  What is the attraction to Istanbal?

Thanks,
Jeff
