Point to Point tickets across borders
Fri, 07/27/2007 - 18:15
I am having a lot of trouble finding prices for point-to-point train tickets. I have found the trains I want to take on the timetable, but I can’t find prices. Most websites say that prices are not available, mainly because they are international journies. For example, prices on SBB.ch are only available for trips from one Swiss city to another.
Is there a website that provides prices, regardless of the destination? Most (if not all) of the tickets I’m looking for require reservations, and I don’t know how to make them if I can’t get them from websites such as SBB.ch, Bahn.de, etc.
I need these prices for comparison purposes, because I’m debating on buying a 3-country Eurail Select pass instead (6 or 8 days, I haven’t decided yet).
Can anyone help me? I am looking for prices for:
August 9: Bern to Rome (Roma Termini)
Depart 7:39
Arrive 16:30
August 11: Rome (Roma Termini) to Bern
Depart 20:40
Arrive 8:21
OR
August 11: Rome (Roma Termini) to Bern
Depart 15:30
Arrive 23:54
August 13: Freiburg im Breisgau to Berlin
Depart 21:58
Arrive 7:40
August 16: Berlin to Bern
Depart 14:33
Arrive 22:56
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The time/cost map here is reasonably accurate:

Of course that doesn’t take into account any special offers…
Your Freiburg – Berlin route shows a normal price of 119 at bahn.de. You couldn’t find that? I picked an arbitrary date in August. It also shows a 29 Euro special price available for certain dates (including reservation, price depends on availability) so you might want to have a closer look there. You could round trip Freiburg-Berlin-Freiburg then proceed to Bern.
How are you getting between Bern to Freiburg? I saw a 19 Euro special price available on that route too at bahn.de
The time/cost map at Rick Steves lists the international tarrifs which are generally higher than what the ticket actually costs if you buy it at the train station in Europe. It’s almost impossible to find prices for international tickets on line. Try putting parts of your itinerary (3 or 4 legs at a time, so it doesn’t recommend a railpass) into www.railsaver.com Follow the “i have a good idea of my itinerary” route and click “I prefer using rail passes (to point to point tickets) ‘only when it saves money.’” The prices that railsaver uses for estimates are the base prices for the tickets —not including reservations since those aren’t covered by a railpass. I think railsaver is pretty accurate except for Spain where they reflect the base price, but you seldom, if ever, find a train you can take for the base price.
